Exploring Our Dynamic Sun:
Heliophysics and Helio-STELLA

What is Heliophysics?

Heliophysics is the study of the Sun and its influence on the solar system, including how solar activity affects Earth and other planets. This field examines solar phenomena such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections, solar wind, and the Sun’s magnetic field, all of which can impact our technological infrastructure, space missions, and Earth.

Why Heliophysics Matters

The Sun’s activity directly impacts our daily lives in numerous ways:

  • Space weather can disrupt satellite communications and GPS systems
  • Space weather storms can affect power grids on Earth
  • Understanding solar radiation is crucial for astronaut safety
  • Solar cycles influence Earth’s climate patterns
  • The Sun serves as our closest laboratory for understanding stellar physics

Introducing Helio-STELLA

Helio-STELLA is an innovative educational spectrometer that brings hands-on heliophysics exploration to students, educators, and the public. This accessible tool bridges the gap between complex solar science and everyday learning experiences.

Helio-STELLA

The Helio-STELLA takes measurements in 10 bands across a wavelength range of 415 – 680 nm and UVA.

Building this device does not require 3D printing or soldering.

What Helio-STELLA Offers:

  • Direct Observation: Examine the Sun’s spectrum and understand its composition
  • Hands-on Learning: Build your own spectrometer with the comprehensive kit
  • Real Scientific Data: Collect and analyze authentic spectral measurements
  • Eclipse Observations: Specially designed to capture data during solar eclipse events
  • Accessible Design: User-friendly for various educational levels from K-12 to higher education

How Helio-STELLA Works:

The kit includes a spectrometer, UV sensor, microcontroller, display, and other components that work together to measure and visualize different wavelengths of light coming from the Sun. The provided software allows users to collect, display, and analyze this data, making abstract concepts tangible through direct observation.
