    Dr. Getirana is an Associate Research Scientist at Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at the University of Maryland College Park and works full time at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in the Hydrological Sciences Laboratory. Dr. Getirana’s research involves the development, improvement and application of state-of-the-art computational models and integration of remote sensing data towards a better understanding of the spatial and temporal water availability and forecast, including extreme hydrological events, such as droughts and floods, and anthropogenic impacts on the water cycle. He is the lead developer of the Hydrological Modeling and Analysis Platform (HyMAP) global scale river routing scheme and contributes to the development of the NASA’s Land Information System (LIS). Dr. Getirana has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and serves as reviewer to top scientific journals in the fields of hydrometeorology, geophysics, numerical modeling and remote sensing. Dr. Getirana leads two NASA-funded projects and one funded by the Brazilian government. These projects focus on better representing the global scale hydrological processes and the development of land data assimilation systems. He has been awarded the NASA Hydrosphere and Biosphere Sciences (HOBI) Annual Peer Award for scientific/technical support in 2015 and the NASA Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geophysics (HBG) Annual Peer Award for scientific achievement in 2017. Dr. Getirana obtained his Ph.D. degree in Hydrology form the Université de Toulouse III (2009) and Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2009). His B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees are in Civil Engineering, both from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
