Dr. Campbell’s research combines forest ecology with plant physiology and remote sensing, using the tools of reflectance and fluorescence spectroscopy. Her interests are in the detection of vegetation stress, characterization of vegetation properties, function and photosynthetic performance. In her research she strives to integrate biophysical and spectral measurements within a modeling framework for evaluation of vegetation health and productivity, detection of stress and retrieval of vegetation morphological and functional traits. Dr. Campbell’s recent focus is on the remote sensing characterization of the diurnal and seasonal stress responses of crops and forests using high temporal frequency observations of high spectral resolution time series for ecosystem assessments of photosynthetic function and productivity.

Special Experience

Dr. Campbell has research experience working with both C3 and C4 vegetation, conducting biophysical and spectral assessments in a variety of forested ecosystems and croplands in both the Northeastern and Southeastern United States. Other study areas include extensive forest decline investigations in the Bohemian Mountains of the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany, boreal forest characterizations in Canada and Eastern Siberia, and many locations throughout Bulgaria. Her research interests include:
• physiological plant ecology: effect of environmental stress on the plants metabolism (photosynthesis and respiration, carbon allocation, development and growth), bio-indicators of vegetation stress and their spectral expression; relationships among vegetation biophysical parameters and their spectral responses;
• forest ecology and sylviculture: canopy structure – LAI, phenology, forest stand dynamics, composition and succession;
• tree physiology: natural and anthropogenic factors causing vegetation stress, tree growth decline and forest damage, physiological processes affected by natural and anthropogenic stress agents, symptoms of forest damage and growth decline.

Research Interests

Research interests include spectral measurements and analysis for the retrieval of vegetation spectral, biophysical and morphological parameters, for detection of vegetation stress and damage (esp. forest disturbance) and monitoring of vegetation physiology at local and regional scales.

Earth Science: Remote Sensing

Past research areas include a variety of forested ecosystems and croplands in both the Northeastern and Southeastern United States. Other study areas include extensive forest decline investigations in the Bohemian Mountains of the Czech Republic, boreal forest characterizations in Canada and Eastern Siberia, and many locations throughout Bulgaria.

Some of my research experience includes:
· planning and coordination of a combined field and airborne campaigns for ecosystem monitoring, early stress and change detection, at both local and regional scales;
· vegetation stress detection using fluorescence and reflectance remote sensing;
· in situ ground spectroscopy for measuring spectral signatures of vegetation;
· development of remote sensing methods for TNT detection due to unexploded land mines – for DTRA;
· spectral and spatial characterization of vegetation responses to a variety of natural and anthropogenic stress agents (e.g., air-pollution, pest/pathogen impacts).
