Carl Malings is an Assistant Research Scientist at Morgan State University, working under the GESTAR II cooperative agreement at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Global Modelling and Assimilation Office. He works to combine atmospheric chemistry models, satellite retrievals, and surface monitor data to better estimate & forecast air quality to support air quality decision-making globally. He also participates in capacity building through the NASA Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) program, providing guidance on how to best use NASA data products to support air quality monitoring and management. He obtained his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2017. Following this, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher with low-cost air quality sensors until 2019.

Brief Bio
Current Projects
Supporting local government public health and air quality decision-making with a sub-city scale air quality forecasting system from data fusion of models, satellite, in-situ measurements, and low-cost sensors
Air Quality
Project PI: K. Emma Knowland
This project aims to develop an online tool for the data fusion of model, satellite, and surface air quality monitoring data, including low-cost sensor data, to improve the estimation and forecasting of air quality at sub-city scales. The tool will be developed in the Google Earth Engine platform, incorporating new and existing air quality datasets. The tool will be made available to the end-users of this project for development and testing in several global and US cities, and following completion of the project will be handed off to the US EPA and UNEP for continued use with stakeholder groups in the US and worldwide.
Forecasting, Modeling Support and Analysis for Asia-AQ
Atmospheric Measurement
Project PI: Patricia Castellanos
This project provides modeling and data analysis support for the NASA ASIA-AQ campaign, including the use of data fusion methods for downscaling regional air quality estimates and forecasts, to be compared and validated with in-situ data obtained during the campaign.
