    Brief Bio

     Dr. Yaping Zhou received a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography and a M.S. in Computer Science from Stony Brook University in 1999. She developed a surface downwelling longwave algorithm for the CERES program through her dissertation work. She did her postdoctoral research at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), conducting atmospheric correction for airplane measurements of Surface Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) from September 1999 to July 2000. She then made an excursion to NOAA, conducting research on ENSO and AO impacts on precipitation in US and developing weather-climate monitoring tools from August 2000 to May 2002 before she joined NASA again. She was a research scientist at the GEST, University of Maryland Baltimore County from 2004 to 2011 and is currently an associate research scientist at GESTAR, Morgan State University. Her research at Goddard includes onboard physical data compression, validation of numerical models with satellite observations, long-term trends of tropical hydrological cycles, tropical cyclone precipitation and extreme precipitation, soil moisture effect on precipitation, etc. She is currently developing an Extreme Precipitation Monitoring System based on TRMM/GPM precipitation measurements.
