    Brief Bio

Dr. Yaping Zhou conducts a broad range of research from recent trends of large-scale tropical hydrological cycle, extreme precipitation, numerical model validation to remote sensing algorithm development. Her research not only involves the science of radiation, cloud, precipitation and aerosol impact on climate system but also the development of remote sensing algorithms for retrieving these important climate variables from satellite remote sensing. Dr. Zhou received a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science and a M.S. in Computer Science from Stony Brook University in 1999. After graduation, she worked briefly at NASA Langley Research Center and the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) at NOAA/NCEP before joining NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a contract and corporate agreement scientist affiliated with local universities. She is currently focused on developing/improving retrieval algorithms such as dust detection and retrieval for the Dark Target aerosol retrieval algorithm for the MODIS and VIIRS instruments and cloud detection for the DSCOVR EPIC instrument. She is also developing an Extreme Precipitation Monitoring System based on TRMM/GPM precipitation measurements.
