    Dr. Oreste Reale received his Laurea in geophysical engineering from the University of Trieste, Italy, in 1990. From 1990 to 1992 Dr. Reale worked on applied geophysics at the University of Trieste. From 1992 to 1996 he was a graduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received his M.S. in meteorology in 1994, and his Ph.D. in meteorology in 1996. Dr. Reale worked in Italy from 1996 to 1999 contributing to the development of a meteo-hydrological operational center (CMIRL, Genoa, Italy). From his activity in Italy he resulted being co-advisor on three theses on synoptic meteorology at the University of Trieste and one thesis in hydrology at the University of Genoa. From 1999 to 2001 Dr. Reale worked in the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA), Maryland, on the impact of land-surface evaporation variability and on the dynamics of Mediterranean floods.
    He joined NASA Goddard through UMBC/GEST in July 2001 as an Associate Research Scientist, working on the synoptic and dynamic meteorology of extreme events, such as tropical cyclones, and on their sensitivity to model improvements and data types. Prior to his current funded proposals, Dr. Reale was PI of a 3-year funded NASA proposal on Observing System Simulation Experiments (2006-2009), and co-I of  funded NASA proposals on the African Monsoon (2007-2009), on Calipso-CloudSat (2010-2014), on long-term predictability of tropical cyclones (2011-2014) and PI of a funded proposal on AIRS (2011-2015).  He became Senior Scientist and Group Lead in GESTAR/USRA in 2011 and  GESTAR/USRA Associate Director in 2015.
     

    Research Interests

    Current Funded Projects

    Dr. Reale is Principal Investigator of a funded NASA proposal to study the impact of AIRS data on tropical cyclone forecasting within a global data assimilation and forecast framework.
    Dr. Reale is also involved in the monitoring, evaluation and validation efforts within the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. Research interests include atmospheric dynamics, tropical cyclones, synoptic-dynamic meteorology, data impact and data sensitivity studies, extreme precipitation forecasting.
