    Lan Jian works in the Heliospheric Physics Laboratory (Code 672) at NASA/GSFC. Her research topics include solar and solar wind activities, particle acceleration and wave-particle interaction, solar-terrestrial relation, space weather prediction, outer heliosphere and local interstellar medium. She has worked on the analysis and interpretation of various solar wind structures, from macroscale to microscale. She has done extensive validation for the prediction of solar wind and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) using multiple coronal and heliospheric models. She has processed and calibrated magnetometer data for NASA missions. She is a Co-Investigator for the Voyager and HelioSwarm missions, and the Deputy Project Scientist of the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF) leading a group of data curation scientists.  

    Lan Jian has published more than 100 papers (most listed at https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6849-5527https://publons.com/researcher/2842626/lan-k-jian/, and https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=0lfTCzwAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao), 23 as the first author. She has given more than 170 first-authored presentations in meetings, including 34 invited talks. She has given about 30 seminars or colloquia at multiple universities and institutes. She hosted and mentored five summer interns at GSFC. She is currently mentoring one graduate student and one postdoc.

    Macroscale structures in the solar wind, including interplanetary coronal mass ejections, fast-slow stream interactions, shocks, heliospheric current sheets and plasma sheets


    Microscale structures in the solar wind, including ion cyclotron waves, magnetosonic/whistler waves, mirror mode waves, etc., and their interaction with solar wind particles


    Solar cycle variation of solar activity and solar wind structures


    Coronal and heliospheric models, space weather prediction


    Voyager magnetometer data processing, studies of outer heliosphere and interstellar medium
