    Dr. Jaehwa Lee joined Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at the University of Maryland in 2012 to work with Dr. Christina Hsu at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Prior to joining ESSIC, he started his postdoc career at Yonsei University, South Korea, where he obtained his PhD degree in Atmospheric Sciences in 2011.

    Research Interests

    Satellite remote sensing of aerosol optical properties

    Dr. Lee's research interest focuses on developing satellite algorithms for retrieving aerosol optical properties primarily using passive satellite sensors, such as MODIS and VIIRS, to better understand their role in the Earth's climate system and air quality. His recent work at Goddard includes improving aerosol optical property models in the aerosol retrieval algorithms, extending the data coverage to the thin-cirrus-covered areas, and retrieving aerosol plume height from a synergistic use of multiple satellite sensors.
