    Dr. Eric Switzer is an Astrophysicist in the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. His research relates observations of diffuse cosmic background radiation to models of our universe at large. He joined the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in the summer of 2013, and is working with the PIPER collaboration.

    Prior to joining GSFC, Eric was a senior research associate at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) and a Kavli Fellow at the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics (KICP).

    Research Interests

    CMB Polarization on large angular scales -- PIPER

    PIPER is a balloon-borne telescope designed to search for a particular polarization signature in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) which is thought to originate uniquely from processes in the very early universe, at energy scales that will be too high to probe in a terrestrial laboratory. PIPER will map most of the sky in millimeter-wavelengths using cryogenic Transition Edge Sensors and a novel polarization modulation scheme. It avoids warm windows by using the ARCADE bucket dewar, where optics are kept cold and dry through liquid and gaseous helium. It will fly for only around one day, and repeat flights at several frequencies from northern- and southern-hemisphere sites.

    Intensity mapping

    The light emitted by atomic transitions in the distant universe will be redshifted by the time it reaches us today. By measuring the spectrum over a region of the sky, an experiment can infer the three-dimensional distribution of matter in a large volume of the universe, based on the atomic radiation. Under some conditions this will work even without resolving the particular emitting objects, permitting 3D "intensity mapping". Through a collaboration based at CITA, Eric analyzed the statistical distribution of matter when the universe was half its present size, using the 21 cm transition of neutral hydrogen and data acquired with the Green Bank Telescope. 

    High-resolution measurements of CMB intensity and polarization

    High-resolution measurements of the CMB intensity have acheived great precision through the Planck Satellite, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). In addition to supporting a standard cosmological model of the universe dominated by dark energy and matter, these experiments have measured the gravitational lensing of the CMB by intervening matter, and the perturbations to the CMB spectrum from the largest clusters of galaxies in the universe. They have also provided an independent check on the number of neutrino species and helium abundance in the early universe. Eric was part of the team that developed ACT and its successor ACTPol, and participated in an analysis of galaxies detected with SPT.

    Atoms in the cosmos

    The early universe was a hot, ionized, and highly uniform gas. As it cooled through expansion, the gas could become neutral and transparent, liberating the thermal photons that are observed today as the cosmic microwave background (CMB). A detailed understanding of this cosmological recombination is required to interpret precise CMB anisotropy measurements of WMAP/Planck/ACT/SPT. Eric refined the calculation of helium recombination, and was part of the community that brought the previous generation of calculations to a higher level of precision for modern CMB experiments. Following recombination, the first luminous objects are fueled by gas and reionize the universe -- atoms provide a diagnostic of this rich evolution up to the present.
