  • Employer: US - Visiting Rearcher
  • Brief Bio

Akiko is a post-doctoral researcher in the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA GSFC. She investigates the predictability of crop composition and production of small African fields using moderate and high-resolution satellite imagery. Prior to working at GSFC Akiko was a PhD candidate at George Mason University evaluating the relationship between sea ice decline and mid-latitude weather and climate using Global Climate Models (GCMs).

    Research Interests

Atmospheric Response to Sea Ice Decline

Understanding the teleconnections between sea ice decline in the Arctic and winter weather and climate extremes in the mid-latitudes.

The Utility of Earth Observing Systems to address Land Cover, Land Use and Food Insecurity

Understanding the skill of Earth Observing Systems and Machine Learning to estimate crop composition and production in regions vulnerable to food insecurity.
