Mariya Mykolayivria Petrenko

Dr. Mariya Petrenko is a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow, studying aerosol emissions from biomass burning. She uses satellite-measured aerosol optical depth (AOD) over specific fire events to evaluate fire emission inventories used in the global aerosol models. She uses primarily MODIS and MISR AOD products, GOCART as her main modeling tool, and coordinates multi-model comparison of biomass burning simulations within the AEROCOM (Aerosol Comparisons between Observations and Models) framework.
In her previous research projects, Dr. Petrenko performed measurements of aerosol properties (size distributions, bulk and size-resolved chemical composition, scattering and absorption) with a suite of laboratory instruments, calibrated instruments and analyzed instrument output to study size-resolved chemical composition and optical properties of rural aerosol.

Dr. Petrenko received her B.S. (2003) in Environmental Science from the National University of “Kiev-Mohyla Academy” in Kiev, Ukraine. Her M.S. (2006) in and Ph.D. (2012) degrees are in Atmospheric Science from the University of Wyoming (Laramie, WY) and Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) respectively.
