Brief Bio

Sadashiva Devadiga is a Physical Scientist in the Terrestrial Information Systems Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Devadiga is an expert in the quality assessment of the remote sensed data products and serves as the Quality Assessment Team lead for land and atmosphere products prodced by the data systems in the lab supporting the Terra, Aqua, SNPP and JPSS missions. He has over 20 years of experience in software development for satellite remote sensing data processing and satellite data analysis for major Earth-observing satellite missions and other image processing applications. His specialization include computer vision, artificial intelligence, image processing, pattern recognition, and remote sensed data analysis.

Leads teams of software developers responsible for creating, maintaining, enhancing and integrating and testing software and verifying that the software produces correct global products for Earth observing satellite instruments, e.g. AVHRR, MODIS and VIIRS.

Lead the team of remote sensing analysts and software developers who are engaged in assessing the quality of global land and atmosphere products produced from data collected by three moderate resolution earth imaging satellites instruments, AVHRR, MODIS and VIIRS.

Performs duties as task lead of the task "LDOPE (Land Data Operational Product Evaluation) Support" under the HBSSS (Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Support Services) contract providing support to the HBSL (Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory) at NASA GSFC.
As manager of LDOPE, a centralized facility for coordinating the quality assessment of remote sensed data products, provide technical leadership to a team of remote sensing data analysts, science software developers, web and database developers engaged in routine quality assessment of large volume of data products generated by processing of the data acquired by several moderate-resolution earth imaging satellite instruments. E.g. MODIS on-board NASA’s Earth observing system, NOAA’s operational weather forecasting satellite, and NASA/NOAA JPSS mission. Lead routine quality assessment of global products, assessment of cross-calibration of instruments, and accuracy, precision and consistency of long-term continuity records generated from processing of the multi-sensor data. Identify and disseminate product quality issues. Provide guidance and consultation to data users from universities and government agencies in US and abroad on quality of these remote sensed data products and recommend resolution to quality issues present in the product.

Identify and implement new strategies for use in routine daily quality assessment of geophysical products, long term trending and monitoring of geophysical parameters in the global products, verification of instrument calibration, and assessment of geolocation accuracy. Perform inter-comparison of heritage products generated from similar instruments on-board the NASA’s earth observation satellites, e.g. MODIS on-board Terra and Aqua, and products from VIIRS on-board NASA-NOAA’s Suomi NPP through estimation of metrics like accuracy, precision and uncertainty.

As a member of LDOPE, a centralized QA facility housed at NASA Goddard, supported the NASA MODIS Land Science Team by developing science algorithms to generate selected land data products, developed Quality Assessment tools for use in assessment of the quality of remote sensed data products, and performed routine quality assessment of products generated by processing of data acquired by MODIS instrument on-board the EOS satellites, Terra and Aqua.
Designed and implemented various data manipulation, analysis and visualization tools to check and ensure the quality of the MODIS Land data products. Developed a Graphical User Interface (GUI) in IDL/ENVI to facilitate interactive execution of the QA tools within the COT software ENVI. Distributed the QA software to the MODIS Land Science teams for use at their Science Computation Facilities, maintained the software and provided tool support to the MODIS Land Science teams.

Research and Teaching Assistant

As a research assistant at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, conducted research in the area of image based motion analysis and pattern recognition. Wrote research proposals, technical reports and published papers in peer reviewed conferences and journals.
Designed and implemented computer vision algorithms for processing sequence of Video and Passive Millimeter Wave images to aid pilots during landing by detecting runways and obstacles on the runway in the image sequence. Proposed and developed an integrated (feature and flow based) hierarchical approach for detection of obstacles. Evaluated sensitivity of various sensors such as FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red), MMW (Millimeter Wave), and HDTV (High Definition Television) for use in vision based navigation. This research was funded by the NASA Ames Research Center, California and NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton Virginia.
Involved in the design and implementation of algorithms to retrieve images from large piles of video data. Evaluated various video sequence indexing algorithms for detecting cuts in video sequences. This was conducted as an early effort to developing video database at the Computer Vision Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University. This research was funded by the IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, California.
