Brief Bio

Dr Young grew up in the town of Amble in England and read Mathematics at Cambridge University. After completing Part III of the Maths Tripos he obtained a PhD working with Dr Helen Mason at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. His thesis title was "EUV Spectroscopy of Solar and Stellar Atmospheres". Following a postdoctoral position at Cambridge he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to work at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics with Dr Andrea Dupree on the analysis of stellar spectra from the FUSE mission. Dr Young returned to England to take up a position at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory where he was the SOHO/CDS Project Scientist and the RAL Project Manager for Hinode/EIS. In 2008 he moved back to the USA to join the Hinode/EIS team at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, where he was employed by George Mason University. In 2015 he moved to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and in 2018 he became a civil servant with NASA.

Dr Young has published over 130 articles that have received more than 10000 citations, and he has an h-index of 50. A full publication list is available.
