Mian Chin is a Physical Scientist in the Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Laboratory, Earth Science Division, at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, U.S.A. Mian Chin received a B.S. degree in chemistry from East China Normal University (Shanghai, China) in 1982, a M.A. degree in chemistry from Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana, U.S.A.) in 1986, and a Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Sciences from Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.) in 1992. During her graduate study in Georgia Tech, Mian Chin was involved in field experiments measuring atmospheric constituents, laboratory study determining atmospheric photochemical reaction rates and product yields, and one-dimensional photochemical model estimating stratospheric sulfur budget. Between 1992 and 1995, Mian Chin was a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Applied Sciences, Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) where she worked with 3-dimensional regional and global atmospheric chemistry and transport models for studying tropospheric ozone, aerosols, and trace gases. Mian Chin was a Research Scientist at Universities Space Research Association from 1995 to 1997 and a Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist at Georgia Institute of Technology from 1997 to 2003 before she joined the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in 2003, concentrating on atmospheric model development and satellite data analysis. Her current research includes aerosol-cloud-chemistry-climate interactions, regional and global air quality, transport of aerosols and trace gases, aerosol impacts on global energy balance, and modeling and analysis of data from satellite, ground-based, and airborne observations.

Research Interests
Investigation of multi-decadal variations of aerosols in different world regions and their impact on environment
Earth Science: AerosolsCurrent Projects
Decadal variations of aerosols in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere: Trends, source attributions, and the role of deep convection
Aerosols
This project is to investigate the decadal change (2005-2014) of upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) aerosols during the Aura satellite period, focusing on the linkage between emissions, deep convective transport (e.g., Asian Monsoon), and the UTLS aerosol source attribution and trend. We use the NASA GEOS-5/GOCART model to analyze observations from Aura and other satellites and aircraft measurements.
Effects of volcanic eruptions on climate and environment – A global model study with satellite data constrained source functions
Aerosols
This project is to (1) determine the volcanic eruption plume height, SO2 and ash injection amount, and volcanic aerosol characteristics using the Terra/Aqua and other satellite data, and (2) examine the immediate and long-term climate/environmental impact of volcanic eruptions using a global model constrained by the satellite observations.
Advancing Coupled Land-Atmosphere Modeling with the NASA-Unified WRF via Process Studies and Satellite-Scale Data Assimilation
Aerosols
This project involves studies of aerosol emission, chemistry, interactions between land and atmosphere, and extreme events through a regional model simulations and data analysis.
Interactions between Asian air pollution and monsoon system – A multi-scale modeling and analysis
