Brief Bio

Dr. Matthew Kehrli is an Oceanographer and Lead Research Scientist for the Ocean Ecology Laboratory (OEL) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 2019. He then earned both his Master of Science (2021) and Doctor of Philosophy (2025) in Oceanography from the University of California San Diego at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. As a member of OEL's Field Support Group, his work primarily focuses on the science and applications of ocean color data products derived from NASA's Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. In this role he also serves as a subject matter expert for the development of standard operating procedures for the review and quality control of optical data submitted to NASA's SeaWiFS Bio-optical Archive and Storage System (SeaBASS). His broader research interests include remote sensing, inverse optical algorithms, radiative transfer techniques, and the collection and processing of optical field data in support of ocean color satellite missions. Beyond his research interests, Matthew is passionate about learning and science communication, and he has served as a mentor and teacher for others throughout his career.
