Dr. Inia Soto Ramos is an Oceanographer and Earth Scientist for Morgan State University at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Ocean Ecology Laboratory. She received her Ph.D. and Master's degrees in Biological Oceanography at the University of South Florida. Her dissertation focused on the evaluation and detection of harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of Mexico. She has expertise in satellite remote sensing, ocean color, and optical oceanography. She has applied her expertise to a variety of multidisciplinary research topics such as coral reefs, marine connectivity, harmful algal blooms and phytoplankton ecology, water quality and coastal dynamics. She is also passionate about scientific outreach and education. She had the opportunity to participate in the binational collaboration between Mexico and the U.S.A. to study Harmful Algal Blooms. She was a Postdoctoral researcher for the Consortium for oil spill exposure pathways in coastal river-dominated ecosystems (CONCORDE) at the University of Southern Mississippi where she coupled satellite imagery, circulation models and field data to understand the river plume dynamics in the Mississippi Bight. Most recently, she works as a Research Specialist and Subject Matter Expert for the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information and Data Cooperative (GRIIDC) at the Harte Research Institute, Texas A & M, Corpus Christi. She is currently the data manager for the EXport Processes in the Ocean from Remote Sensing (EXPORTS) Project and SeaWiFS Bio-optical Archive and Storage System (SeaBASS).
