Brief Bio

Dr. Gina DiBraccio is the Deputy Director of the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Her research focuses on magnetospheric physics and solar wind-planetary interactions for both intrinsic and induced planetary magnetospheres throughout the Solar System. More specifically, Dr. DiBraccio studies the transfer of energy through space plasmas and magnetic fields through the analysis of in situ data at various planets. Using a comparative planetology approach, her research and publications have involved Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

As the Deputy Principal Investigator and Project Scientist of NASA’s MAVEN mission, Dr. DiBraccio is actively pursuing the effects of the solar wind on atmospheric escape at Mars in order to understand the planet’s climate evolution. Her role on MAVEN’s Magnetometer team includes supporting the careful calibration and processing of data for scientific analysis. Dr. DiBraccio has been involved in research at Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus by utilizing data from the MESSENGER, MAVEN, Juno, Cassini, and Voyager 2 missions. She implements a comparative planetology approach to understand various plasma physics phenomena occurring within planetary magnetospheres including but not limited to: magnetic reconnection, flux rope and plasmoid formation mechanisms, global magnetosphere structure and configuration, current sheet dynamics, magnetospheric contributions to planetary evolution and atmospheric escape, and the effects of extreme solar events on a planet’s local space environment.

Dr. DiBraccio received her Ph.D. in Space Science from University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. Her thesis work investigated magnetic reconnection and space plasma dynamics throughout Mercury’s magnetosphere. She also holds a Master’s degree in Atmospheric and Space Sciences from the University of Michigan and two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in Physics & Astronomy and Business Administration.

Research Interests

Magnetospheric physics

Solar System: Magnetospheres

Understanding the typical magnetospheric characteristics at various planets while comparing and contrasting the properties to understand which factors have the greatest influence on particles and fields in a planet's local space environment.

Solar wind-planetary interactions

Heliophysics: Space Weather

The physics driving intrinsic and induced magnetospheres are drastically different. The solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field play different roles at each planet to determine how energy is transferred from the sun to the planet.

Magnetic reconnection in intrinsic and induced planetary magnetospheres

Heliophysics: Plasma Processes

Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous plasma phenomenon occurring throughout space. It drives the transfer of energy between magnetic fields and particles while shifting the organization of a planetary magnetosphere. The conditions which drive this process at various planets have many outstanding questions.

Space Weather Effects

Solar System: Magnetospheres

Understanding the impact of solar activity on planetary magnetospheres, including solar events such as Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs), and solar flares on planetary magnetospheres.
