Brief Bio


Dr. George Khazanov is the member of the Geospace Physics Laboratory at Goddard Space Flight Center. Prior to joining NASA, in 2001, Khazanov was a Full Tenured Professor of Physics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Geospace Physics Laboratory conducts experimental and theoretical research to support the scientific activities of the NASA/GSFC. The principal objective of Dr. Khazanov is to develop an understanding of the physical processes that control the geospace plasma environment and its interaction with both natural and man-made bodies in space. Dr. Khazanov was the Dean of the College of Physics, and the Theoretical Physics Department Chair at Altai State University, Russia; Chief of the Ionospheric Plasma Physics Laboratory at Irkutsk State University, Russia. He is author or co-author of 6 books, the editor of 3 monographs, and more than 300 peer reviewed publications. Dr. Khazanov supervised and directed more than 30 M.S, 15 PhD graduates, and 7 postdoctoral fellows.

Research Interests


KINETIC THEORY OF SPACE PLASMAS

Specific research areas include: analysis of hot plasma interactions with the thermal space plasma; in-space propulsion technologies; investigation of a current collection by a tether system; plasma sails fundamentals; space plasma energization and transport; kinetic theory of superthermal electrons in the ionosphere and plasmasphere; hydrodynamic and kinetic theory of space plasma in the presence of wave activity; theoretical investigation and numerical modeling of ionosphere-plasmasphere interactions; theoretical study of artificial injection of charged and neutral particles into the ionosphere; waves and beam-induced plasma instabilities in the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Has been active in developing numerical methods for solving particle transport problems with emphasis on the development of numerical methods for solving the Boltzmann transport equation for the superthermal electrons, ring current ions and the generalized transport equations, modeling of high speed plasma flows in ionosphere, plasmasphere and magnetosphere.
