Brief Bio

Dr. Cooper is responsible as Chief Scientist within the Space Physics Data Facility at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for science and data archiving interactions with operational geospace and heliospheric missions, while also having strong research interests in convergent science themes related to space physics for NASA’s Sun-Solar System Connections, Solar System Exploration, and astrobiology programs. His research interests focus on space environment interactions icy bodies of the outer solar system including Kuiper Belt Objects and moons & rings of Saturn and Jupiter. He has previously been involved in research on energetic particle and related experiment data from the first missions to Saturn and Uranus, respectively Pioneer 11 in 1979 and Voyager 2 in 1986, the CRRES satellite mission in 1990-1991, the Galileo Orbiter mission from 1997 to the present, while now also pursuing work on the Saturn magnetosphere as a member of the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) team at Goddard. Dr. Cooper carried out doctoral dissertation research with the late Professor John A. Simpson on modeling the origin of high energy trapped protons in Saturn’s radiation belts from galactic cosmic ray ion interactions with the main rings of that planet, while later determining the total ring mass from a related analysis of Pioneer 11 charged particle and gamma ray data acquired near the rings. He has been Principal Investigator on many NASA research projects relating to analysis of Galileo Orbiter energetic particle data, modeling of moon-magnetosphere interactions for the Galilean moons in the Jupiter system, cosmic ray flux modeling and icy body interactions for the outer heliosphere, and solar wind interactions with the Moon.
Dr. Cooper participated as a member of the Cosmic & Heliospheric panel in organization of NASA’s Space Physics Data System during the mid-1990’s and now leads development of the Virtual Energetic Particle Observatory (VEPO) with funding from the NASA Heliophysics Division. He was a member of the Science Definition Team for the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO), contributed to the 2004 final report on science requirements for this mission, and was later a member of the Science Definition Team for the proposed Jupiter System Observer mission to Jupiter. He was chairman and lead author on a published 2002 community study sponsored by the Division of Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) on exploration of Europa and participated in another DPS study for the Kuiper Belt. Dr. Cooper was lead guest editor for special issue sections of Icarus (2005) and Astrobiology (2006). He has served on the Steering Group for the Lunar Exploration Science Working Group at NASA Goddard and is a member of Goddard’s Human Exploration Virtual Institute (HEVI). In early 2014 he also became a member of the NASA Goddard science team, DREAM2 – Dynamic Response of Environments at Asteroids, the Moon, and Moons of Mars, for the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI).

Current Projects

Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF)

Virtual Energetic Particle Observatory (VEPO)

Inner Heliosphere

Principal Investigator for VEPO as a part of the NASA heliophysics virtual observatories program. Provides enhanced access to energetic particle data for browsing and analysis from NASA and international spacecraft making measurements in the heliosphere.

Lunar Environment And Dynamics for Exploration Research (LEADER)

Moons

Co-Investigator for the LEADER Center for Space Environments, a modeling-lab-data center of excellence that will answer the overarching question: “How does the highly variable energy and matter in the inner heliosphere affect volatile stability, plasma interactions, dust migration, and surface micro-structure at the Moon, and how does the dynamic environment change with human presence?" As humankind begins to colonize the Moon and utilize resources found there, we will need to be aware of the environmental challenges, both for the health of the astronauts but also for the long-term viability of their equipment. Hazards include radiation, surface charging, lunar dust, solar wind and meteoroids. However, in addition, the inverse process is an important unknown: the nature and extent of human contamination and disturbance of the lunar environment. In the LEADER integrated team study, we propose to take our previous research one step beyond our past accomplishments to determine not only the response of the Moon to interplanetary conditions, but to study the response of the lunar environment to human activity. Conversely, we will study in-depth the effect of the lunar environment on humans and their equipment.
