Missions & Projects

Brief Bio

Dr. Robert Levy has been a Research Physical Scientist in the Climate and Radiation Laboratory (CRL) since 2013. Dr. Levy is focused on retrieving global aerosol properties from satellite observations, and using the retrieved products for quantifying the role of aerosols in climate and air quality. He is responsible for maintaining the "dark-target" aerosol retrieval for MODIS, and applying it to VIIRS and other sensors (AHI and ABI) to create a long-term global aerosol record and characterize the aerosol diurnal cycle. Dr. Levy’s research has ranged from applications of new algorithm development, monitoring surface air quality, aerosol/cloud interactions and aerosol trends. His publication list and citation metrics can be found at ResearcherID. Currently, he is the Flight Project Scientist for the GOES-R mission.

Current Projects

GOES-R Flight Project Scientist

Remote Sensing

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) – R Series is the nation’s most advanced fleet of geostationary weather satellites. The GOES-R Series provide advanced imaging with high spatial resolution and fast coverage to ensure accurate forecasts, real-time mapping of lightning activity, and improved monitoring of solar activity and space weather. The GOES-R Series is a four-satellite program (GOES-R/S/T/U) that will extend the availability of the operational GOES satellite system through 2036. As project scientist, I help to ensure that the flight hardware is meeting all operational and scientific requirements, while also communicating with Goddard's Earth Science Division

Adding high temporal resolution to the global long-term aerosol data record: A synergy of LEO and GEO

Aerosols

What is the diurnal cycle of aerosol optical depth? Here, we are adapting the dark-target (DT) aerosol retrieval to the new generation of imagers in geostationary (GEO) orbit.  So far, these include the Advanced Baseline Imagers (ABI) on GOES-16 and GOES-17, as well as the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on Japan's Himawari-8.  Once we have retrievals from the GEO imagers, we can add them into the long-term global record.  This project is supported by MEaSUREs-2017 (Making Earth Science data Records for Use in Research Environments).

Maintenance of the MODIS Dark-Target Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm and Products

Aerosols

This "Senior Review" funded project is to maintain MODIS dark-target aerosol products from both Terra and Aqua platforms. Primary tasks include continued validation and evaluation of the product, assisting users, and fixing problems if needed.

Can Citizen Science and Low-Cost Sensors Help Improve Earth System Data: Implications to Current and Next Generation of Space-Based Air Quality

Atmospheric Measurement

I am Co-I on this NASA-funded (CSESP = Citizen Science for Earth Systems) project to bring low-cost citizen science into the air quality research community. The goals of this project include A) introduce citizen scientists to the science of aerosol monitoring, B) create and deploy low-cost air quality sensors in three networks around the world, C) connect the ground-based datasets with satellite retrievals. D) provide training and feedback to the citizen scientists.
