Brief Bio


Dr. Jaehwa Lee is an Associate Research Scientist at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and works within the Deep Blue Aerosol Team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. He earned his PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from Yonsei University, South Korea, in 2011 and joined ESSIC in 2012. Dr. Lee's research focuses on developing aerosol retrieval algorithms for passive satellite sensors in LEO and GEO.


His recent work at Goddard includes enhancing the Deep Blue algorithm suite for various sensors, such as MODIS, VIIRS, and new-generation GEO imagers. He has also developed an over-land aerosol algorithm for AVHRR, as well as an algorithm that simultaneously retrieves aerosol layer height and single scattering albedo using passive satellite sensors. He has been a member of the MODIS and VIIRS Science Teams.

Dr. Lee's research focuses on the development of aerosol remote sensing algorithms for passive satellite sensors making measurements from UV to IR wavelength range, to better understand aerosols' role in the Earth system. His recent work at Goddard includes enhancing the Deep Blue aerosol algorithm suite applied to AVHRR, MODIS, VIIRS, and new-generation GEO imagers, developing an algorithm to simultaneously retrieve aerosol layer height and single scattering albedo using passive satellite sensors, improving aerosol optical models used in Deep Blue particularly for nonspherical mineral dust, and extending aerosol data coverage to the areas covered by thin cirrus clouds.
