Missions & Projects
Brief Bio
Dr. Milam works in the Astrochemistry Laboratory at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. She is an expert in rotational spectroscopy, observations, and laboratory modeling of astrochemistry and molecular astrophysics of the interstellar medium, star formation regions, and comets. Her observational focus is on the compositional studies of primitive bodies, namely comets and interstellar objects, and uses ground- and space-based facilities to understand their connection to the formation and evolution of planetary systems. She also has a laboratory dedicated to simulate interstellar/cometary/planetary ices and detect trace species employing the same techniques used for remote observations to help constrain the chemical complexity of the ices, the amount of processing that occurs, and interpret past and present data from missions that observe ice features. Dr. Milam has been working on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as the Project Scientist for Policy and Science Community since 2024, and prior to that as Deputy Project Scientist for Planetary Science since 2014 and the Planetary Science Liaison since 2012. She also led the study team for solar system science for the Roman Space Telescope. In 2021, she was honored with asteroid 40706 (1999 RO240) was renamed to 40706 Milam and received the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 2022 for her work on enabling Solar System Science with JWST.
Research Interests
SubLIME – Sublimation Laboratory Ice Millimeter / submillimeter Experiment
Solar System: Astrochemistryhttps://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/691/sublime/
We have developed a laboratory technique that utilizes gas-phase, direct-absorption millimeter and submillimeter spectroscopy to detect and identify desorbed species from ice samples, including those representative of interstellar and cometary ices. The results of these in-situ measurements are directly comparable to remote observations by instruments used by, ALMA, JWST, and other submillimeter and infrared spectroscopic observatories. This project combines the structure specificity and high resolution of gas-phase rotational spectroscopy with studies of gas/ice interactions in planetary/cometary ice analogs. Our experiment offers the planetary science community a powerful new tool for the studies of chemical evolution, molecular complexity, and prebiotic origins throughout the Solar System and the universe.
Theory and Observation Group
Solar System: Cometshttps://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/691/theory/
Our research group is part of the Astrochemistry Laboratory in the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. We specialize in developing theoretical models for the formation and destruction of molecules in comets, the interstellar medium, circumstellar envelopes, and other extraterrestrial environments. In combination with spectroscopic observations using radio/submillimeter/infrared telescopes, we investigate the chemical origins and evolution of matter throughout the Galaxy.
Solar System Science with JWST
Solar System: Remote Sensinghttps://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/691/JWSTSSS/index.html
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Solar System Science Group serves both the Guaranteed Time Observing (GTO) program team of Dr. Heidi Hammel (AURA) as well as General Observing (GO) investigators with Solar System time and some aspects of the Jupiter ERS Program led by Imke de Pater and Thierry Fouchet. The group consists of members from many institutions across the world, all with the common goal of utilizing the power of JWST for the exploration of our own solar system.
