Energy Analysis of a Substorm Based on Remote Sensing Techniques

Nikolai Ostgaard

By using observations from the Polar Ionospheric X-ray Imaging Experiment (PIXIE) and the Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) on board the Polar satellite, we have developed a method to present global maps of the 5 min average precipitating electron energy distribution from 10 eV to ~ 100 keV within regions of one hour magnetic local time and 6 deg corrected geomagnetic (CGM) latitude. For the first time it is possible to study how the electron precipitaion varies both spatially and temporally on a global scale. Other results based on X-ray imaging by the PIXIE camera will also be presented.
