Okay.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Maybe you can see it in reflection.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">But that.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Is fairly easy to cross going in<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">and then a little harder to cross going out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Right. So that&#8217;s the behavior that we want.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So here are the choices that I made.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Simple machines.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">I&#8217;m using incline plains.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Okay.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So going in I want it to be relatively easy to close.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So I made this a little bit shallower and coming up.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">I want that to be not impossible.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">But but it&#8217;s a medium difficult to open.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">We don&#8217;t want it to open easily. Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So this is a steeper slope.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">I don&#8217;t know if you can really see that here on this plot, but, on the drawing.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">But this is a little bit<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">longer of a slope, and this is a little bit shorter of a slope,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">and then it&#8217;s flat in the middle,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">because if it was pointed in the middle the point would wear out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So we have easy medium.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And wear resistance.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Those are the choices that I&#8217;m making when I&#8217;m designing<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">that little piece that&#8217;s sticking out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">That is engineering.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And what branch of engineering.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Would that fall under mechanical and mechanical engineering.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">into a different.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">I mean, you know, you could talk about design<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">for additive manufacturing because I could make that shape.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">That shape is not difficult to make in three dimensional printing.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">It&#8217;s difficult to make in machining because you&#8217;d have to fixture<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">from a bunch of different directions to get the machine tools in there.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">design for additive manufacturing and,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">mechanical engineering, simple machines,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">materials, properties and wear resistance.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Did you, did you go through some iterations looking at<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">like different clasps or anything, or were you pretty set on what you,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">you know, just knew just, because of your experience doing this?<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So, I went through<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">a couple of iterations, mostly to, get the interaction right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So, and again, I don&#8217;t know if you can see this, but I added<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">little ears that stick out on either side of the top here.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">They stick out just for symmetry.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">It&#8217;s the one over here that matters.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">That&#8217;s the one that I tested.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And so here is the test bed.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Okay. Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So I 3D printed a section of this,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">which would be impossible to do in, in regular machining.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So additive manufacturing, really easy to make a prototype.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">It took, you know, half an hour to print or something.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And then, the question is, what kind of behavior do I have here?<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Is it enough of it or action that I&#8217;m happy with that snap?<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Because I don&#8217;t want it to be<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">too difficult to move.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And I also don&#8217;t want it to<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">I don&#8217;t want this thing to stick out so far that it interferes<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">with you getting your finger in there to get the SD card out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So that looks like this.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So that&#8217;s like this.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">You want to be able to get in here<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">and get the SD card out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">If this thing if this little nub sticks out too far, it&#8217;ll get in your way.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">The other thing that I did, was<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">I added material above the SD card slot.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So you can&#8217;t put the SD card<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">into something above the slot and leaves it inside the instrument.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Which was pretty annoying before.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So this then.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So we have that there, and then<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">we push and it,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">you think it latches, but it just kind of stops.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And if you shake it hard enough, it&#8217;ll fall out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So what we want is to have something that will stop it falling out.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Because if that little card falls out in the field, you&#8217;re not finding it again.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">It&#8217;s much too small. Yeah.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So, so there&#8217;s the little door.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">There&#8217;s. Brilliant.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And I just found out as I was putting one of these back together, showing you,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">that you really need to leave this door open when you&#8217;re putting the lid on.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Because the lid and the door<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">can interact with each other and open the door.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So new considerations, order of operations,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">following instructions, all that good stuff.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Awesome.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Iteration is really important.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Imagination is really important.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Empathy is really important.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Right.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">We put that extra piece of material in there to stop people<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">losing their SD card inside the, instrument.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">If we&#8217;re thinking about it from their point of view, you might not care.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">So, you know, and then.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And then I had it before where it didn&#8217;t have that piece of materials<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">like, oh, I can add that material.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">That&#8217;s easy enough to do.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Whereas if we had to do this in traditional manufacturing,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">we would have to anticipate all of this<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">ahead of making a traditionally manufactured prototype.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And we get to maybe iterate ones based on cost.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">The thing about additive manufacturing, especially plastic additive manufacturing,<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">3D printing, is that you can iterate kind of as much as you want.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And so lets you iterate and reconsider.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And do that in a way that is really low cost and quick.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">that&#8217;s that&#8217;s why you want to learn these things.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">That&#8217;s why we want people to learn to do 3D printing is because that&#8217;s how they<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">that&#8217;s how you make stuff these days.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">And, and even if you&#8217;re going to traditionally manufacturing if you can 3D<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">printed to test it, test fit your parts, make sure they&#8217;re working properly.<\/p><p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Make sure your mechanisms are actually behaving themselves.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Watch as engineer Paul Mirel breaks down the fascinating engineering principles behind designing the perfect snap-fit clasp for STELLA instruments.
