Brief Bio

Dr. Liu is a Research Astrophysicist at GSFC with more than 20 years of experience in research on the dynamics and compositions of Earth’s and planetary upper atmospheres and ionospheres. Her current research focuses on the ionospheric electrodynamics, studying how terrestrial weather impacts the upper atmosphere and space weather. She is a member of the GDC Project Science Team, and she has served as PI on a number of NASA awards.

Research Interests

Ionosphere and thermosphere

Heliophysics: Earth's Ionosphere

Upper atmosphere dynamics

Heliophysics: Earth's Atmosphere

Satellite and ground-based observation

Heliophysics: Remote Sensing

Ion-neutral coupling

Heliophysics: Space Weather

Current Projects

Impacts of atmospheric planetary-scale waves on the equatorial ionosphere

Earth's Ionosphere

LWS funded project to better understand how the ionosphere responds to the forcing from below in the lower atmosphere. This project includes analyses of satellite and ground-based observations as well as simulations of coupled whole atmosphere and ionosphere models.

Subseasonal to seasonal variability of the upper atmosphere

Earth's Atmosphere

This project aims at the impacts of terrestrial weather and climate on the upper atmosphere. Partners include UCAR/NCAR.

GNSS radio occultation

Technology & Missions

Perform a simulation study for GNSS receivers on the GDC mission.
