Brief Bio

Svetlana's research interest involves life detection techniques and biosignature protocols on planetary surfaces, with emphasis on Mars. This includes multiwavelength Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy instrument development for astrobiology missions, studies of false spectral biosignatures, spectral signatures of biogenic vs. abiogenic macromolecular carbon, and protocols to aid the Mars Sample Return (MSR) campaign. She is a collaborator on the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover and a science team member on ESA's ExoMars rover.

In addition, she is active in engaging the mission planning research community in defining and developing life detection mission technology strategies in her work with NASA's Center for Life Detection (CLD). She is also involved with engaging the public by serving the Astrobiology Program office as a bridge between the NASA Astrobiology Program and the NASA-funded educational activities of the Science Activation program.

Research Interests

Developing tools for life detection mission planning

Solar System: Astrobiology

  • Part of the NASA Network for Life Detection (NFoLD) Center for Life Detection team, an Ames-Goddard ISFM program.
  • Informs science traceability and life detection technology definition
  • Leads the community engagement strategy of the project to increase community awareness, use, participation, and vetting in tools for life detection mission planning efforts such as the Life Detection Knowledge Base (LDKB)
  • Engages relevant communities by sharing the tool’s utility, broadening participation, and managing documentation / reporting of CLD engagement activities

Bringing Astrobiology resources and expertise to educators

Solar System: Astrobiology

  • Connects NASA astrobiology materials, subject matter experts (SMEs), and resources to the educators and partners (e.g. NASA Science Activation teams) who would benefit from using them with their learners
  • Maintains and improves existing NASA Astrobiology Program education resources

Current Projects

Development and community engagement of tools and repositories for life detection mission planning

Astrobiology

I provide tools and expertise to bridge and enable community participation in the definition and development of life detection technologies and missions. This entails establishing awareness, building a user base, and increasing the use and sustainability of the Life Detection Forum suite of webtools.

Informing in situ biosignature searches on Mars and selecting samples for Mars Sample Return

Astrobiology

I analyze terrestrial natural samples of various ages and diagenetic extents using Raman and UV spectroscopy instrumentation similar to that on Perseverance rover's SHERLOC and SuperCam instruments. I also served on the rover science team from 2019-2021. I use lab analog instrumentation as well as Mars analog samples to inform spectral data obtained on potential biosignature-containing samples on Mars. My current participation on the Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) team on ESA’s upcoming ExoMars rover mission also ensures my ongoing commitment to analyzing organic-rich samples containing potential biosignatures from spectroscopy-based payload instruments.

Understanding false positive biosignatures in UV fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy instruments

Astrobiology

This work is based on biosignature searches using UV LIF and Raman spectroscopy instrumentation which may encounter challenges with unambiguously distinguishing spectra of organic compounds from Ce-bearing compounds. Ce3+ produces fluorescence within the spectral window often attributed to organics using instrumentation on Mars rovers such as SHERLOC. This may suggest that Ce3+ is a biosignature mimicker. This project seeks to mitigate false positive biosignature detections on Mars and other planetary surfaces.

Understanding shock signatures on Mars with Raman spectroscopy

Planetary surfaces

This work involves analyses of shock extent in Mars analog samples such as a suite of experimentally shocked natural terrestrial feldspars using Raman spectroscopy instruments considered analogous to those on Perseverance Rover (such as SHERLOC) or breadboards of such instruments (such as SuperCam).
