Aerosol Amount and Aerosol Type -- MISR Research Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm Development and MISR Standard Algorithm Validation

Aerosols

The MISR Research Aerosol retrieval algorithm (RA) is used (1) to develop retrieval techniques for application to the MISR Standard Aerosol retrieval algorithm (SA), (2) to help validate results from the SA, and (3) to perfrom a range of detailed studies of wildfire smoke, desert dust, volcanic plumes, and urban and industrial pollution particles. The RA offers higher spatial resolution than the SA ( 1.1 km vs. 4.4 km), better radiometric calibration, better characterization of the ocean and land surface, a broader range of particle optical model options, and a number of more subtle advances. The original development of the RA, and associated validation of the SA, is documented in a series of publications (Kahn et al., 1997; 1998; 2001; 2004; 2005; 2007; 2009; 2010; Kahn & Gaitley, 2015). Recent algorithm advances, by J. Limbacher and R. Kahn, is documented in (Limbacher & Kahn, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019).

Wildfire Plume-height Climatology and Smoke Particle Evolution

Aerosols

Using the multi-angle stereo imaging capabilities of the MISR instrument, we have analyzed wildfire smoke injection height for many case studies, and all the major wildfire regions of the world.  Continuing work includes detail analysis of regional smoke properties by vegetation type, and an assessment of multiple model paramerizations of smoke-plume injection. Work to date includes analysis of smoke particle evolution using the MISR Research Aerosol Retrieval algoirthm and a synthesis with the plume-height observations, documented in a series of publications (Kahn et al., 2007, 2008; Val Martin et al., 2010; 2012; 2018; Vernon et al., 2018; Zhu et al., 2018; Gonzales-Alonzo et al., 2018; Petrenko et al., 2012; 2017; Solmos et al., 2015; Nelson et al. 2013; Kahn, 2020; Junghenn-Noyes et al., 2020.

Volcanology from Space

Aerosols

Using plume-heights from MISR multi-angle stereo analsys, aerosol type from the MISR Research Aeorosl retrieval algorithm (RA), thermal anomalies and context imagery from MODIS, SO2 mapping from OMI, and vertical aeerosol profiles downwind from CALIPSO, we analyze the evolution of particles within individual eruption plumes and remobilized ash, the variation in plume properties from multiple eruptions of individual volcanoes, and the differences in eruptive plume properties among different volcanoes, globally. Recent work includes a comprehensive assessment of plumes observed by MISR for Kamchatka and Iceland over approximately two decades (2000 - 2019), and is documented in a series of publications (Kahn et al., 2007; Kahn & Limbacher 2012; Scollo et al., 2012; Flower & Kahn, 2017a; 2017b, 2018, 2020a; 2020b).

Air Quality Application of Multi-angle Remote Sensing

Aerosols

MISR multi-angle, multi-spectral imaging provides qualitative constraints on aerosol properties -- particle size, shape, and light-absorption and its spectral dependence, under favorable retrieval conditions. This work relies heavily on the MISR Research Aeorosl retrieval algorithm, both for high-spatial-resolution retrievals, and for detailed particle-type discrimination. We explore both statistical and physical approaches to assessing air quality. The statisitcal approach uses advanced regression analysis, whereas the physical appproach aims at constraining a physically based air quality model with the combination of in situ and satellite remote-sensign data. This work is documented in a series of publications (Liu et al., 2007a; b; c; 2009; Van Donkelaar et al., 2010; 2016; Patadia et al., 2013; Friberg et al., 2017; 2018; deSouza et al. 2020).

PUMAS (Practical Uses of Math And Science) Editor and founder

October 1996 - Present

PUMAS is the On-line Journal of Math and Science Examples for Pre-College Education.

PUMAS is an on-line journal, a collection of brief examples showing how math and science topics taught in K-12 classes can be used in interesting settings, including everyday life. The examples are written primarily by scientists, engineers, and other content experts having practical experience with the material. They are aimed mainly at classroom teachers and are available to all interested parties via the PUMAS web site. Our goal is to capture, for the benefit of pre-college education, the flavor of the vast experience that working scientists have with interesting and practical uses of math and science.

PUMAS examples allow scientists to share their own experience of how the topics covered in pre-college math and science classes can actually be used.  Examples may be anecdotes, activities, demonstrations, descriptions of "neat ideas", formal exercises, or puzzles. They may be written in any style that serves the material well.  Each example is peer-reviewed by at least one scientist with a relevant background, and at least one teacher at an appropriate grade level. Once accepted, a PUMAS example is a citable reference, in a refereed journal for pre-college science education.

PUMAS asks scientists to contribute what they are best equipped to contribute, their understanding of practical uses, and that extra spark that comes from having real experience with the material. Contributors spend a minimum time on logistics, as PUMAS provides the infrastructure, connection to the curriculum, and dissemination to a world-wide audience of pre-college teachers.

Teachers can search the PUMAS collection based on curriculum topic, grade level, or subject. They can select relevant examples, and develop ideas of their own about how to integrate the material into their lesson plans.

NASA Disaster Response effort; Active Aerosol Plume-height (AAP) Project

April 2016 - Present

Kahn and his group contribute regularly to the NASA Disaster Response effort, providing plume height, wind vector, and particle-property mapping for wildfire, volcano, and dust plumes whenever possible, using observations from the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument. Some notable recent contributions include MISR results for the La Soufriere volcano eruption in 2021, when MISR happened to capture the peak of the eruption. MISR plume-height and particle property information contributed directly to first-responder air quality and aviation hazard modeling in this case. During the 2020 wildfire season in the western US, MISR plume-height and smoke-plume extent mapping was part of the larger effort to model the environmental impacts of multiple fires. MISR also captured the eruption plume of the Hunga Tonga volcano in January 2022 multiple times, again providing plume-height mapping and constraints on particle-property evolution.

NASA Earth Observatory Advisory Panel

1998 - Present

Kahn has been a member of the NASA Earth Observatory advisory panel since the inception of this widely used resource for education and outreach. He frequently provides background science explanations and reviews of EO stories, and contributes to stories covering satellite observations and the impacts of airborne particles on climate and air quality.
