Dr. Dorothy K. Hall is a Research Scientist at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) / University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. Following her retirement as Associate Lab Chief and Senior Scientist in the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, she was a Fixed-Term Full Professor at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, 2015 – 2017. Her research interests include remote sensing of snow, small glaciers & the Greenland Ice Sheet, lake ice and sea ice, with a focus on decade-scale changes. She received a Ph.D. from University of Maryland in the Department of Geographic Sciences. While at NASA Dr. Hall led the MODIS Snow and Sea Ice Mapping Project which develops and maintains snow and ice algorithms for products that are used by researchers worldwide. She has authored one book, Remote Sensing of Ice and Snow, by D.K. Hall and J. Martinec (1985), 19 book chapters, more than 145 journal articles, and more than155 other papers. She has mentored many graduate students and post-doctoral scientists and served on master's and Ph.D. committees at various universities. She has been an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in the Dept. of Geography and Geology (2009 – 10), an Affiliated Professor at George Mason University in the Earth Science and GeoInformation Systems Dept. (2005 – 06), and a Distinguished Visiting Scientist at the University of Delaware Dept. of Geography (2002 – 03). She is a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal (2009) as well as other NASA and external-to-NASA awards. She is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.
