  • Brief Bio

Dr. Yury Vikhliaev received his masters degree in applied math and physics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1996, with specialization in geophysical fluid dynamics and oceanography. From 1996 to 1999 he was a research assistant in the Geological Institution of Russian Academy of Science, where he worked on reconstruction of history of sedimentary basins and participated in creation of geo-information database of tectonic maps of the Pre-Kaspian Sedimentary Basin. From 1997 to 1999 he was employed at SOVGEOINFO as an operational technician and participated in creation of geo-information database of topographic maps of Russia. He received his Ph.D. degree in Climate Dynamics from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, in January 2006. His Ph.D. research was focused on understanding the decadal climate variability in the Pacific Basin and analysis of low frequency dynamical modes in numerical climate models using the breeding technique. Upon graduation, Dr. Vikhliaev held the position of Research Scientist at the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies, Calverton, Virginia. His work was focused on understanding climate noise and climate predictability using coupled general circulation model simulations. For five years, Dr. Vikhliaev was a Research Associate with GEST/UMBC; subsequently, he joined GESTAR/Universities Space Research Association in May 2011. While with GEST, he developed a coupled climate model for NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. He continues his work on coupled climate modeling in collaboration with NASA/GMAO, and conducts a research of climate variability and predictability on interannual-to decadal time scales. Since March 2019, Dr. Vikhliaev takes a position of Lead Research Scientist at Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI).

    Research Interests

    Climate dynamics.

Extensive knowledge in physics of ocean, atmosphere and climate dynamics.

    Climate modeling.

Ten years of research experience in climate modeling, climate variability and predictability as a member of international team.

    Current Projects

    Coupled climate modeling.

Dr. Vikhliaev's task is coupled climate modeling. A goal of this task is development of the GEOS-5 Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Model (GEOS-5 AOGCM) and research in climate variability and predictability on interannual-to-decadal time scales. The GEOS-5 AOGCM is a coupled climate model developed at the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). The GEOS-5 AOGCM is designed to simulate climate variability on a wide range of time scales, from synoptic time scales to multi-century climate change. The main components of the GEOS-5 AOGCM are the atmospheric model, the catchment land surface model, both developed by the GMAO, MOM5, the ocean model developed by the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and CICE4, the sea ice model developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The model is used at the GMAO for assimilation of climate data, climate predictions and for basic climate research. Currently, the model produces a realistic, stable mean climate and interannual climate variability, however, there are some deficiencies that have to be addressed. To improve the model performance, Dr. Vikhliaev conducts and analyzes multi-decadal high resolution climate simulations. This task also includes providing assistance to other researchers in conducting numerical experiments using the GEOS-5 AOGCM.
