    Dr. Thomas J. McGee is an atmospheric scientist, leading a very successful group of scientists studying Atmospheric Composition using a number of Lidar techniques. He has been affiliated with the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) since its inception in 1991. His group has participated in numerous international measurement campaigns with measurements from ground-based, balloon and aircraft platforms. Prior to coming to Goddard in 1980, Dr. McGee was an Assistant Research  Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his graduate degree in Physical Inorganic Chemistry from the University Of Notre Dame studying the spectroscopy of transition metal chelates.

    Research Interests

    Ground and Aircraft Based Vertical Profile Measurements of Atmospheric Constituents.

    We have developed  Lidar instrumentation to measure vertical profiles of water vapor, ozone, temperature and aerosols in both the troposphere and the stratosphere. Of particular interest currently is the study of ozone pollution in the boundary layer and the free troposphere. Our Tropospheric Ozone lidar is a mobile instrument which is currently participating in NASA's Discover-AQ-Denver mission, providing ozone profiles throughout the day from near ground level to approximately 10 KM above sea level. These profiles have a 7 - 10 minute temporal resolution, and a variable vertical resolution ranging from 150 m up to 1 km at the higher altitudes. The data provide insight into stratospheric/tropospheric intrusions.  Used in conjunction with other aircraft and ground data, they provide insight into the chemistry and dynamics of the lower atmosphere.

    Ground-based Lidar Measurements in Support of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC)

    Two mobile instruments were developed for this work; a Stratospheric Ozone Lidar and an Aerosol and Temperature Lidar. Both instruments also have the capability to make simultaneous water vapor measurements in conjunction with their primary measurements. The instruments were developed to ensure the integrity of similar measurements within NDACC by providing a standard for other NDACC instruments to compare against. These instruments have participated in many national and international campaigns, from 79.5 N to 45 S.

    A second Stratospheric Ozone lidar to measure Aerosols, Temperature and Ozone has flown on board the NASA DC-8 primarily to study ozone depletion as the sun rises in the Arctic Spring releasing stored chlorine to begin the catalytic destruction of ozone. The temperature measurements are used to study gravity wave formation as the atmosphere moves over the local topography. This instrument has participated in four large DC-8 missions.
