  • Brief Bio

Dr. Fung has authored or co-authored over 60 peer reviewed scientific publications. He has extensive experience in analyzing plasma, wave and field data from spacecraft (e.g., the ISEE, DE, Voyager, Hawkeye, IMAGE) and performing theoretical modeling of various terrestrial and planetary magnetospheric plasma processes. He has studied the spectral characteristics and the energization of particle precipitations in the auroral zones, wave-particle interaction processes along the auroral magnetic field lines, the frequency-time structure and the generation of the terrestrial VLF emissions, the detection and location of the auroral parallel electric fields, finite geometry effects of field-aligned currents, the auroral current-voltage relationship, and the global electrodynamics of the ionosphere-magnetosphere system. In addition, Dr. Fung has analyzed and modeled the terrestrial and planetary (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) radio emissions observed by the DE, Voyager, and IMAGE spacecraft; performed theoretical modeling of the generations and the emission characteristics in terms of nonlinear wave-wave interactions and the electron cyclotron maser instabilities; performed ray-tracing calculations to study the effects of propagation of radiation in a plasma. In addition, Dr. Fung, a member of the Radio Plasma Imager team on the IMAGE mission, is actively participating in the development of radio imaging of the magnetosphere. In the past few years, Dr. Fung has also been leading a research team at the NASA GSFC to develop a new generation of trapped radiation models using semi-empirical techniques. Dr. Fung is a current Vice Chair on the COSPAR Panel on Standard Radiation Belt (PSRB).
