    Peggy E. O’Neill received her B.S. degree summa cum laude with University Honors in geography from Northern Illinois University in 1976, her M.A. degree in geography from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1979, and has done post-graduate work in civil and environmental engineering through Cornell University. Since 1980 she has been employed as a Physical Scientist in the Hydrological Sciences Branch at NASA / Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD where she conducts research in soil moisture retrieval and land surface hydrology, primarily through microwave remote sensing techniques. She is currently the SMAP Deputy Project Scientist.

    Current Projects

    Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Mission

    SMAP successfully launched on January 31, 2015 (the first of the new Earth Science Decadal Survey missions), and is now in extended mission operations.  SMAP's objective is to provide frequent and accurate updates of land surface soil moisture for many science and socital applications.  I am currently the SMAP Deputy Project Scientist, and I also lead the passive-only (L2_SM_P) soil moisture retrival algorithm team.

    ComRAD Field Measurements

    ComRAD is a truck-mounted active/passive L-band microwave instrument system which serves as a ground-based SMAP simulator.  ComRAD is currently collecting data useful to SMAP retrieval algorithms over specific types of land cover.  It will be deployed in the near future to collect L-band measurements in support of a P-band radiometer to measure root zone soil moisture.

    High Spatial Resolution Capability for Microwave-based All-Weather Global Evapotranspiration Measurements

    The main goal of this GSFC Internal Research and Development project is to develop the driving technologies for a passive microwave (PMW) radiometer optimized for land surface temperature (LST) retrieval at 3 km spatial resolution. Increasing the spatial resolution of the MW radiometer by a factor of 3 is targeted to remove a key bottleneck in current capabilities to monitor terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET) through thermal-based energy balance approaches.

    Determination of Best Microwave Antenna Approach for Future High Resolution Measurements from Space

    This IRAD seeks to determine the technology path which shows the most promise as the right path forward for GSFC investment through a trade study analysis which determines the effective limits of three different antenna approaches: (1) what is the largest real aperture mesh reflector that is feasible to spin and control (mechanically and thermally)?  [SMAP example];  (2) what is the largest aperture synthesis radiometer in either 1-D or 2-D that can meet the requirements for radiometric accuracy in a cost-effective manner?  [SMOS example]; and (3) where is the accuracy boundary between active-passive and passive-only approaches while reaching spatial resolution targets? While all three of these approaches have produced viable microwave measurements from space at relatively coarse resolution for accurate retrieval of soil moisture and other geophysical parameters, the limits to growth in the size of these antennas and hence the achievable spatial resolution in the future is currently unknown.  This study will examine the trade space between size and complexity versus performance, accuracy, swath coverage, etc. for each antenna approach.

    Root-Zone Soil Moisture using a P-Band Radiometer

    Soil moisture is a key hydrologic variable that controls the Earth’s water and energy balance. L-band microwave observations provide the optimum measurement to estimate surface soil moisture (SMAP and SMOS). There is a need to provide soil moisture measurements at deeper soil depth for land surface hydrology and agricultural applications. This IRAD aims to develop a ground-based P-band radiometer that will help to develop the technology and the science algorithms to monitor root-zone soil moisture.

    Analysis of Plant Productivity Linkages to Evapotranspiration and Stress (APPLES) (and consequences for future mission design)

    The terrestrial evapotranspiration Science Task Group (STG) will conduct research that will provide a foundation for the development of an integrated energy, water, and carbon cycle analysis over land.  The group will explore the linkages of land surface hydrology with vegetation and evapotranspiration, and in particular water stress.  Development of these linkages will aid in future design of terrestrial hydrospheric and biospheric satellite missions.  In particular, the STG will investigate the synergism between PRI (photochemical reflectance index), ET, and hydrology measurements with a particular emphasis on stress conditions.

    Brief Bio

    Peggy E. O’Neill received her B.S. degree summa cum laude with University Honors in geography from Northern Illinois University in 1976, her M.A. degree in geography from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1979, and has done post-graduate work in civil and environmental engineering through Cornell University. Since 1980 she has been employed as a Physical Scientist in the Hydrological Sciences Branch at NASA / Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD where she conducts research in soil moisture retrieval and land surface hydrology, primarily through microwave remote sensing techniques. She is currently the SMAP Deputy Project Scientist.
