    Nima Pahlevan is a remote sensing scientist with the Terrestrial Information Systems Lab at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Formerly had been trained in geospatial science, Dr. Pahlevan earned a Ph.D. in Imaging Science from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he received extensive training in optical/thermal imaging from scene acquisition to image processing/reconstruction. Prior to joining GSFC in 2014, Dr. Pahlevan finished a two-year postdoctoral term working on insitu and satellite-based ocean color measurements at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Currently, Pahlevan also holds an adjunct faculty appointment at University of Maryland, Department of Geography.

    Research Interests

    Currently, our team's primary focus is on generating consistent water quality products from satellite missions like Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 to improve global water quality monitoring in nearshore coastal and inland waters. Our end goal is to deliver timely, accurate, and consistent satellite products to end-users to avoid and/or mitigate occurrences of hazardous water quality conditions posing threats to human lives and aquatic habitats/ecosystems.

    Current Projects

    Moderate-to-coarse Multi-sensor Calibration Referencing for Optical Satellite Sensors (M2CROSS)

    This project aims to examine interconsistency of moderate-resolution Earth imagers, i.e., TM/ETM+/OLI and MSI, against global coarse-resolution sensors, including MODIS, VIIRS, and OLCI over uniform water bodies and snowfields. 

    Science-Instrument Trade Analysis for the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) planned for the Pre-Aerosol, Clouds, and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission

    The PACE ocean color team (based at GSFC) examines various instrument design scenarios for the OCI to maximize exploring new ocean sciences while minimizing engineering challenges/risks  

    Development of a low-cost imaging system/platform to facilitate validating global land surface products

    In this project, we have developed a robust imaging system on an unmanned aerial vehicle to validate Essential Climate Variable (ECVs), including BRDF/albedo products, derived from optical satellite missions.

    This project aims at supporting the activities of the joint Korean-US ocean color (KORUS-OC) field campaign planned in May-June 2016 within the field of view of the Korean Geostationary ocean color imager. The end goal is to optimize the design parameters of the future Geo-CAPE ocean color mission to achieve the defined science goals.
