    Nima Pahlevan is a remote sensing scientist with the Terrestrial Information Systems Lab at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Formerly had been trained in geospatial engineering and remote sensing, Dr. Pahlevan earned a Ph.D. in Imaging Science from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he received extensive training in optical/thermal imaging from scene acquisition to image processing/reconstruction. Prior to joining GSFC in 2014, Dr. Pahlevan finished a two-year postdoctoral term working on insitu and satellite-based ocean color measurements at the University of Massachusetts Boston. His team’s main area of research lies within aquatic remote sensing, algorithm developments, calibration/validation, and applied sciences pertaining to water quality. Pahlevan is a member of Landsat Science Team, participates in CEOS Cal/Val activities and the Surface Biology Geology (SBG) formulation study, and is leading multiple  NASA/USGS research/application projects.

    Research Interests

    Currently, our team's primary focus is on generating consistent water quality products from satellite missions like Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 to improve global water quality monitoring in nearshore coastal and inland waters. Our end goal is to deliver timely, accurate, and consistent satellite products to end-users to avoid and/or mitigate occurrences of hazardous water quality conditions posing threats to human lives and aquatic habitats/ecosystems.

    Current Projects

    Develop machine-learning models for hyperspectral/multispectral radiometric observations in highly turbid and eutrophic coastal and inland waters

    - High-fidelity decomposition of inherent optical properties into specific absorption/backscattering properties from hyperspectral radiometric data

    - Derive enhanced multimission water quality products (e.g., chlorophyll-a + SPM) from existing multispectral missions  

    Atmospheric Correction Intercomparison Exercise over bodies of water (ACIX-Aqua)

    ACIX is an international collaborative initiative to inter-compare a set of atmospheric correction (AC) algorithms for moderate-resolution optical sensors. The exercises will focus on Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 data over a set of test areas. The end goal is to identify strengths and weaknesses of various atmopsheric correction methods and propose a hybrid approach to generate operational Level-2 reflectance products. 

    AERONET-OC: Validating satellite-derived reflectance products in inland waters

    We have established three autonomous radiometers at three locations, including Lake Okeechobee (FL), Green Bay (WI), and Grizzly Bay (CA). This effort is part of the AERONET-OC network (https://aeronet.gsfc.nasa.gov) and funded by the Landsat-8 project science.

    Promoting Earth observation to support country reporting of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6.3.2 and 6.6.1 related to water quality

    We are working with multiple countries in south America and Africa to enable EO-based reporting and monitoring of water quality in select sites (lakes, reservoirs, rivers). Water authorities and Ministry of Environment in these countries are working with us to evaluate satellite-derived products at the pilot sites.
