     ● Using his advanced theoretical techniques, Mishchenko performed a seminal sensitivity analysis of various passive algorithms for the retrieval of aerosol properties from space using radiance and polarization data and exposed the power of polarimetric remote sensing of tropospheric aerosols. He and his group developed an innovative algorithm for the retrieval of aerosol properties from multi-channel ISCCP radiance data and composed a global satellite climatology of aerosol optical thickness and size for the full period of satellite observations. This development led to the discovery of a possible downward trend in the global amount of tropospheric aerosols between the pre-Pinatubo period and early 2000s. The results of these analyses have been key in the justification, formulation, and execution of the NASA Glory space mission which Mishchenko led as the Project Scientist.
    ● Another major accomplishment was the development of quasi-analytical T-matrix methods for numerically exact computer calculations of electromagnetic scattering by polydispersions of randomly and preferentially oriented nonspherical particles. These techniques are based on the Waterman’s EBCM solution of the Maxwell equations and exploit the powerful mathematical apparatus of the quantum theory of angular momentum. The resulting computer programs are applicable to nonspherical particles with size parameters exceeding 200, have benchmark accuracy within their range of applicability, and help reduce the requisite computer time by a factor of 100–1000 in comparison with alternative numerically exact techniques. Owing to their unparal-leled performance characteristics, these programs have become a standard tool for the modeling of scattering and absorption properties of hydrometeors; hydrosols; dust, dry sea-salt, and volcanic aerosols; polar stratospheric and noctilucent cloud particles; contrail particles; cirrus cloud particles at infrared wavelengths; red blood cells and other biological microorganisms; and various man-made and natural particulates used in scientific, engineering, and biomedical research. In collaboration with Daniel Mackowski, the quasi-analytical averaging approach has been gen-eralized to arbitrary clusters of spheres based on the superposition T-matrix method. Evolving versions of the T-matrix computer programs have been publicly available on-line since 1997 and have been used in 900 peer-reviewed publications worldwide.
    ● Mishchenko performed the first comprehensive theoretical studies of the effects of nonspherici-ty and complex morphology on radiative, polarization, and depolarization properties of mineral aerosols, fractal soot aggregates, and young contrail particles. He was the first to quantify the errors in dust-aerosol retrievals with passive satellite instruments resulting from the neglect of par-ticle nonsphericity. Using advanced single- and multiple-scattering computer programs, Mishchenko parameterized the effects of particle shape in several cloud and aerosol retrieval algorithms used in analyses of satellite data.
    ● Mishchenko (in collaboration with Joachim Hovenier) established the fundamental relationship between the linear and circular depolarization ratios for randomly oriented nonspherical par-ticles which has had a major impact on radar and lidar research.
    ● Mishchenko has made paradigm-changing contributions to the physics of radiative transfer (RT) and directional radiometry. His most fundamental achievement is the microphysical derivation of the general theories of RT and coherent backscattering (CB) directly from the Maxwell equations. Although the phenomenological RT equation had been used for more than a century in countless remote-sensing and atmospheric-radiation applications, its physical basis had remained uncertain. Mishchenko’s microphysical derivation revealed a fundamental link between electromagnetics, RT, and CB (otherwise known as weak localization of electromagnetic waves); established the physical meaning of all participating quantities; clarified formal conditions of applicability of the RT equation; and established the physical nature of measurements with a directional radiometer. The microphysical derivation of the RT equation allowed him to identify and dispel numerous profound misconceptions inherent in the conventional phenomenological radiometry and RT theory. As a result, the disciplines of RT and directional radiometry have become legitimate branches of physical optics. Most recently, Mishchenko used the microphysical approach to resolve the long-standing problem of deriving the RT equation for a multi-particle group imbedded in an absorbing host medium.
    ● Mishchenko and his group have made pioneering contributions to the emerging branch of statistical electromagnetics based on numerically exact computer calculations of electromagnetic scattering by particulate media. Mishchenko was the first to demonstrate all observable manifestations of the CB effect using direct computer solutions of the Maxwell equations. His computations and analyses, including the most recent ones in collaboration with Daniel Mackowski and Karri Muinonen, have fully corroborated the methodology used in the microphysical derivation of the asymptotic low-density RT and CB theories and improved the quantitative understanding of the range of applicability of these theories.
    ● Another practically important achievement was the development of highly efficient and accurate techniques for the computation of the (polarized) bidirectional reflection function for plane-parallel particulate layers. These techniques are based on numerically exact computer solutions of the Ambartzumian nonlinear integral equation and the invariant embedding equation and are among the fastest and most accurate numerical RT tools available. The resulting computer programs have been in the public domain since 1999 and have been used in ~70 peer-reviewed publications.
    ● Based on the Saxon’s reciprocity relation for the amplitude scattering matrix, Mishchenko derived a simple yet rigorous relationship between the diffuse and coherent components of radiation reflected by a particulate medium in the exact backscattering direction. This result, known as the Mishchenko decomposition, allows one to compute all photometric and polarization characteristics of monostatic lidar and radar returns with full account of CB by solving only the conventional RT equation. Mishchenko’s numerical computations explained unusually strong and highly depolarized radar returns observed for icy surfaces of the Earth, the Galilean satellites, and permanently shadowed polar regions of Mercury.
    ● Mishchenko predicted theoretically the polarization opposition effect caused by CB, confirmed this effect via direct computer solutions of the Maxwell equations, and demonstrated that it explains unusual polarization properties of light backscattered by such solar system objects as Saturn’s rings, Galilean satellites of Jupiter, and E-type asteroids.

    Brief Bio

     ● Using his advanced theoretical techniques, Mishchenko performed a seminal sensitivity analysis of various passive algorithms for the retrieval of aerosol properties from space using radiance and polarization data and exposed the power of polarimetric remote sensing of tropospheric aerosols. He and his group developed an innovative algorithm for the retrieval of aerosol properties from multi-channel ISCCP radiance data and composed a global satellite climatology of aerosol optical thickness and size for the full period of satellite observations. This development led to the discovery of a possible downward trend in the global amount of tropospheric aerosols between the pre-Pinatubo period and early 2000s. The results of these analyses have been key in the justification, formulation, and execution of the NASA Glory space mission which Mishchenko led as the Project Scientist.
    ● Another major accomplishment was the development of quasi-analytical T-matrix methods for numerically exact computer calculations of electromagnetic scattering by polydispersions of randomly and preferentially oriented nonspherical particles. These techniques are based on the Waterman’s EBCM solution of the Maxwell equations and exploit the powerful mathematical apparatus of the quantum theory of angular momentum. The resulting computer programs are applicable to nonspherical particles with size parameters exceeding 200, have benchmark accuracy within their range of applicability, and help reduce the requisite computer time by a factor of 100–1000 in comparison with alternative numerically exact techniques. Owing to their unparal-leled performance characteristics, these programs have become a standard tool for the modeling of scattering and absorption properties of hydrometeors; hydrosols; dust, dry sea-salt, and volcanic aerosols; polar stratospheric and noctilucent cloud particles; contrail particles; cirrus cloud particles at infrared wavelengths; red blood cells and other biological microorganisms; and various man-made and natural particulates used in scientific, engineering, and biomedical research. In collaboration with Daniel Mackowski, the quasi-analytical averaging approach has been gen-eralized to arbitrary clusters of spheres based on the superposition T-matrix method. Evolving versions of the T-matrix computer programs have been publicly available on-line since 1997 and have been used in 900 peer-reviewed publications worldwide.
    ● Mishchenko performed the first comprehensive theoretical studies of the effects of nonspherici-ty and complex morphology on radiative, polarization, and depolarization properties of mineral aerosols, fractal soot aggregates, and young contrail particles. He was the first to quantify the errors in dust-aerosol retrievals with passive satellite instruments resulting from the neglect of par-ticle nonsphericity. Using advanced single- and multiple-scattering computer programs, Mishchenko parameterized the effects of particle shape in several cloud and aerosol retrieval algorithms used in analyses of satellite data.
    ● Mishchenko (in collaboration with Joachim Hovenier) established the fundamental relationship between the linear and circular depolarization ratios for randomly oriented nonspherical par-ticles which has had a major impact on radar and lidar research.
    ● Mishchenko has made paradigm-changing contributions to the physics of radiative transfer (RT) and directional radiometry. His most fundamental achievement is the microphysical derivation of the general theories of RT and coherent backscattering (CB) directly from the Maxwell equations. Although the phenomenological RT equation had been used for more than a century in countless remote-sensing and atmospheric-radiation applications, its physical basis had remained uncertain. Mishchenko’s microphysical derivation revealed a fundamental link between electromagnetics, RT, and CB (otherwise known as weak localization of electromagnetic waves); established the physical meaning of all participating quantities; clarified formal conditions of applicability of the RT equation; and established the physical nature of measurements with a directional radiometer. The microphysical derivation of the RT equation allowed him to identify and dispel numerous profound misconceptions inherent in the conventional phenomenological radiometry and RT theory. As a result, the disciplines of RT and directional radiometry have become legitimate branches of physical optics. Most recently, Mishchenko used the microphysical approach to resolve the long-standing problem of deriving the RT equation for a multi-particle group imbedded in an absorbing host medium.
    ● Mishchenko and his group have made pioneering contributions to the emerging branch of statistical electromagnetics based on numerically exact computer calculations of electromagnetic scattering by particulate media. Mishchenko was the first to demonstrate all observable manifestations of the CB effect using direct computer solutions of the Maxwell equations. His computations and analyses, including the most recent ones in collaboration with Daniel Mackowski and Karri Muinonen, have fully corroborated the methodology used in the microphysical derivation of the asymptotic low-density RT and CB theories and improved the quantitative understanding of the range of applicability of these theories.
    ● Another practically important achievement was the development of highly efficient and accurate techniques for the computation of the (polarized) bidirectional reflection function for plane-parallel particulate layers. These techniques are based on numerically exact computer solutions of the Ambartzumian nonlinear integral equation and the invariant embedding equation and are among the fastest and most accurate numerical RT tools available. The resulting computer programs have been in the public domain since 1999 and have been used in ~70 peer-reviewed publications.
    ● Based on the Saxon’s reciprocity relation for the amplitude scattering matrix, Mishchenko derived a simple yet rigorous relationship between the diffuse and coherent components of radiation reflected by a particulate medium in the exact backscattering direction. This result, known as the Mishchenko decomposition, allows one to compute all photometric and polarization characteristics of monostatic lidar and radar returns with full account of CB by solving only the conventional RT equation. Mishchenko’s numerical computations explained unusually strong and highly depolarized radar returns observed for icy surfaces of the Earth, the Galilean satellites, and permanently shadowed polar regions of Mercury.
    ● Mishchenko predicted theoretically the polarization opposition effect caused by CB, confirmed this effect via direct computer solutions of the Maxwell equations, and demonstrated that it explains unusual polarization properties of light backscattered by such solar system objects as Saturn’s rings, Galilean satellites of Jupiter, and E-type asteroids.
