    Current Projects

    NASA's Gondola for High Altitude Planetary Science (GHAPS)

    GHAPS is being designed in a modular fashion and to interface to a suite of instruments as called for by science needs. It is envisioned that the gondola will offer a small suite of facility instruments that guest observers can use for their respective science observations.

    Stratospheric balloon-borne platforms typically operate at altitudes ~100,000 feet (30+ km) above the Earth. The GHAPS’ Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) is a 1-meter class aperture. The envisaged wavelength span for such a platform would cover the near-ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared portions of the spectrum.

    Planetary Scientist - Research Assistant Professor

    • As Program Investigator (PI), developed a 5-year program to study the chemical composition and physics of faint objects (comets) at relative large heliocentric distances
    • Key objective: To understand the origin of the early solar system and its evolution, via the remote analysis of pristine material in cometary atmospheres and their relation to young stellar objects using spectroscopy (from radio to optical wavelengths)
    • Additional duties: Programmatic obligations related to managing the cooperative agreement, providing annual progress reports, and monitoring the overall award budget to ensure costs are within the grant requirements
       
    4/2016 - 10/2017

    GHAPS Deputy Project Scientist

    • Bear overall responsibility for all aspects of the proposed investigation, including the management of the flow-down of top-level science goals into functional and technical requirements and specifications for the various GHAPS instruments.
    • Assist with the contracting effort for instrument studies and their construction.
    • Assist with planning and executing an I&T strategy for the GHAPS instruments, data acquisition, reduction, and interpretation of the observational campaigns, as well as in publishing the results in the refereed literature.

    • Awarded a 3-year fellowship to develop (chemical) models and perform observations to investigate the inventory and origin of cometary organics
