    Radiation Belt Dynamics

    The physics of wave particle interactions and their importance in the dynamics of the Earth’s radiation belts. The interaction of electromagnetic waves with near-Earth plasma regimes and their effects on the radiation belt dynamics during geomagnetic storms are poorly understood. Utilising data from the Van Allen Probes and low altitude observations from BARREL Antarctic balloon array and SAMPEX I will fully quantify the role of electromagnetic waves in the acceleration and loss of radiation belt electrons.

    Magnetospheric Substorms

    The physical process or processes leading to explosive release of energy during the terrestrial substorm. Substorm onset remains a timely and highly contentious topic. Utilising in-situ and ground-based observations I seek to develop a comprehensive view of the substorm, in order to diagnose the physical mechanism(s) leading to substorm onset.
