    Dr. Casey investigates black carbon, dust and debris geology and geochemistry in the cryosphere via remotely sensed and in situ measurements. These studies aid in the understanding of particulate provenance, sediment cycling and radiative impacts. She is adept in use of remote sensing observations to map ice radiance, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and atmospheric influences. She has experience in analytical chemistry techniques, including ice core and surface ice composition characterization. Her field experience includes ice core retrieval, and ground penetrating radar acquisition in Antarctica. She has conducted field work and led observation campaigns at glaciers and ice sheets on all 7 continents on Earth.

    Dr. Casey started her science career with research fellowships at Washington University (1996-1999), University of Maryland (1997), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (1998) and then as a cryospheric support scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md (2000). In 2008, she moved to Oslo, Norway, accepting a European Space Agency sponsored Ph.D. fellowship to improve satellite remote sensing of Earth's glaciers. She received her Ph.D. in remote sensing geoscience from the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo, Norway in 2011. During her Ph.D. research, Dr. Casey studied six glacier sites around the world; from volcanically influenced glaciers in Iceland and New Zealand to dust-influenced glaciers in Nepal and Switzerland to bare-ice and soot-influenced glaciers in Svalbard and southern Norway. Her results demonstrate that satellite data can be used to map the geochemical composition of glacier dust and debris. She returned to NASA Goddard in November 2011.

     Kimberly Casey is a glaciologist working in the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Casey served as a glaciologist for the 1500 m South Pole intermediate depth ice core retreival, providing regional ice flow and stratigraphy analysis.  Dr. Casey participated in ice core recovery at the South Pole in the 2014-2015 austral field season.  She also specializes in cryospheric dust, debris and black carbon quanitification, studying cryospheric sites around the world; from volcanically influenced glaciers in Iceland and New Zealand to dust-influenced glaciers in Nepal and Switzerland to bare-ice and soot-influenced ice near South Pole and at glaciers in Svalbard and southern Norway. Specialized in mapping of cryosphere, reprojection, geolocation, image processing. Responsible for designing, coding and maintaining research group website.     Brief Bio

    Dr. Casey investigates black carbon, dust and debris geology and geochemistry in the cryosphere via remotely sensed and in situ measurements. These studies aid in the understanding of particulate provenance, sediment cycling and radiative impacts. She is adept in use of remote sensing observations to map ice radiance, stratigraphy, geochemistry, and atmospheric influences. She has experience in analytical chemistry techniques, including ice core and surface ice composition characterization. Her field experience includes ice core retrieval, and ground penetrating radar acquisition in Antarctica. She has conducted field work and led observation campaigns at glaciers and ice sheets on all 7 continents on Earth.

    Dr. Casey started her science career with research fellowships at Washington University (1996-1999), University of Maryland (1997), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (1998) and then as a cryospheric support scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md (2000). In 2008, she moved to Oslo, Norway, accepting a European Space Agency sponsored Ph.D. fellowship to improve satellite remote sensing of Earth's glaciers. She received her Ph.D. in remote sensing geoscience from the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo, Norway in 2011. During her Ph.D. research, Dr. Casey studied six glacier sites around the world; from volcanically influenced glaciers in Iceland and New Zealand to dust-influenced glaciers in Nepal and Switzerland to bare-ice and soot-influenced glaciers in Svalbard and southern Norway. Her results demonstrate that satellite data can be used to map the geochemical composition of glacier dust and debris. She returned to NASA Goddard in November 2011.
