    James J. Butler

    Brief Bio

    James J. Butler has served as EOS Calibration Scientist since 1995, Deputy NPP Project Scientist for Instruments and Calibration since 2004, JPSS Deputy Chief Project Scientist since 2011, and JPSS Project Scientist for Flight since 2011. He also serves as Principal Investigator of the Code 618 Radiometric and Diffuser Calibration Laboratories. He received the B.S. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1977 and the Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982. He is currently and optical physicist in the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

    Research Interests

    Dr. Butler’s current research interests include the calibration and characterization of remote sensing instrumentation from the ultraviolet through the microwave, optical metrology, radiometry, remote sensing, and the measurement of reflective and transmissive optical scatter. His previous research experience at NASA includes ground-based and balloon-borne lidar for the detection of stratospheric molecular and radical species and laser-induced fluorescence of molecules and radicals. As a research associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), he conducted research in the photoionization and dissociation dynamics of state selected hydrocarbons and in photoelectron spectroscopy.

    Brief Bio

    James J. Butler has served as EOS Calibration Scientist since 1995, Deputy NPP Project Scientist for Instruments and Calibration since 2004, JPSS Deputy Chief Project Scientist since 2011, and JPSS Project Scientist for Flight since 2011. He also serves as Principal Investigator of the Code 618 Radiometric and Diffuser Calibration Laboratories. He received the B.S. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1977 and the Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982. He is currently and optical physicist in the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

    Research Interests

    Dr. Butler’s current research interests include the calibration and characterization of remote sensing instrumentation from the ultraviolet through the microwave, optical metrology, radiometry, remote sensing, and the measurement of reflective and transmissive optical scatter. His previous research experience at NASA includes ground-based and balloon-borne lidar for the detection of stratospheric molecular and radical species and laser-induced fluorescence of molecules and radicals. As a research associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), he conducted research in the photoionization and dissociation dynamics of state selected hydrocarbons and in photoelectron spectroscopy.
