  • Brief Bio

My career is best understood in the context of family/life balance.  A year after the birth of my first child, after completing an undergraduate degree majoring in Physics at a women's liberal arts college, I began my part-time graduate school career.  After three years and a master's degree, I changed schools and began a PhD program with a specialty in atmospheric science.  Although I was hoping to pursue a teaching career, I accepted a contractor position at Goddard Space Flight Center (again, part-time).  I continued as a 3/4 employee for about the next decade, transitioning to full-time when I became a civli servant, my oldest began college and my youngest (of five) started first grade.  Throughout this time my interest was modeling stratospheric ozone, progressing with the field from 1-D models to 2-D (latitude/altitude) and then 3-D (using specified meteorology), always keeping the modeling activity and results close to observations, often pursuing parallel analysis of observations and simulated output that was sampled in the same manner as the observations.I was fortunate to serve as a member of the project science team for the Upper Atmopshere Research Satellite (UARS) and then for Aura, and served as project scientist for Aura 2009 - 2017.  I am currently co-lead for one of the premier chemistry climate models, that couples a photochemical mechanism appropriate for climate applications in the stratosphere and troposphere with the state-of-the-art general circulation model that is developed in the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office.  At GSFC, we continue to expand the use of data-based diagnostics, specifically focusing on diagnostics that test the realism of the simulated response to perturbations in composition and climate, thereby reducing uncertainty in projections.  I began phased retirement (a half time position) in January 2017.

    Research Interests

    Chemistry Climate Modeling

My research has focused on the use of observations from satellite, aircraft and ground-based instruments to evaluate and test atmospheric models that include a representation of the photochemical processes that control ozone in the stratosphere and troposphere.  In the 1990s and early 2000s,  observations were used with a two-dimensional (latitude/altitude) model and then a three-dimensional chemistry and transport model that combined a complete representation of stratospheric chemical reactions with meteorological information from the GSFC data assimilation system.  These applications formed a foundation for leadership in the Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry Climate Model (GEOSCCM), a three-dimensional model that couples a general circulation model with a representation of relevant stratospheric and tropospheric photochemical processes. The current focus is to develop data-based strategies that are independent of specific meteorology and therefore can be used to evalute CCMs.  We emphasize development and use of diagnostics that can also used to understand the simulated response to changes in composition and climate.

    Current Projects

    Past Aura Project Scientist

As project scientist for Aura, one of the large Earth Observing System observatories, I work to foster communication among the groups responsible for different aspects of this program:  mission operations and flight operations, data producers, Aura science team, NASA headquarters.  We also strive to make scientific advances made with Aura data known to the science community and as appropriate to the general public.  The largest task is preparation of the senior review proposal for continued operations, a biennial and somewhat consuming endeavor.  2014 marked a decade of successful operations.  Since entering phased retirement, I am assisting the next project scientist with the transition.

Member, Chemistry Climate Model Leadership team

The Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry Climate Model (GEOSCCM) is a joint venture between the atmospheric chemistry and dynamics laboratory (614) and the Global Modeling and Assimiation Office (610.1).  This is one of the premier models of its kind, and is used to project the stratospheric ozone level as chlorofluorcarbons decrease (due to cessation of their production as a result of the Montreal Protocol) and as the stratosphere cools due increases in greenhouse gases.  My principle interest is the use of observations, especially from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellie and from Aura, to evaluate our CCM (and others) and to use performance on diagnostic tests to understand differences in response to various preturbations.  Since entering phased retirement, my responsibilities include participating in the CCM leadership team to ensure a smooth transition.

Synergistic Analysis of Observations and Simulations from the Global Modeling Initiative Chemistry and Transport Model and the Goddard Earth Observing System Coupled Chemistry Climate Model

This project emphasizes analysis of observations in parallel with analysis of fields simulated using the Global Modeling Initiative Chemistry and Transport Model (CTM) and the Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry Climate Model (GEOS CCM).  These models use the same photochemical mechanism, but the CTM calculates transport using meteorological fields from a data assimilation system that are input to the CTM, whereas the CCM includes a general circulation model, solving the equations of motion and producing meteorological fields that are consistent with the simulated ozone.  Fields from a CTM may be compared directly with measurements, as the meteorological conditions are specified and realistic for each day.  Such comparisons are not useful with a CCM, as the meteorological contribution to continuity equations is likely substantially different from the actual conditions of the measurement.  Parallel analysis of observations and both types of simulation is necessary to identify relationships in the observations that are independent of the particular meteorology and therefore reveal a useful pathway for bringing the information from observations to bear on the CCM.  Funding for this project ended at the end of FY16, but the endeavor is ongoing at reduced level of effort as I have entered phased retirement.

    Brief Bio
