Daw has worked on instrumentation for and analysis of imaging and spectroscopy of the solar corona from the EUV to the NIR for over twenty years, drawing on extensive laboratory experience in atomic and molecular physics. At NASA/GSFC, Daw is PI of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (EUNIS) sounding rocket, Mission Scientist for the Interface Region Imaging Spectro-graph (IRIS), is an active researcher in obtaining and analyzing spectroscopic data from total solar eclipses, and in a number technology development efforts, including: diffraction gratings and photon sieves for the EUV, a photon sieve demonstration CubeSat (FalconSAT-7) in collaboration with the Unites States Air Force Academy, radiometric calibration techniques for the EUV, and for the Solar and Lunar for Absolute Reflected Imaging Spectroradiometer (SOLARIS) as part of the Climate Absolute Radiance and Reflectivity Observatory (CLARREO) mission. As a student, Daw’s introduction to solar physics was on analysis of data obtained by the Normal Incidence Soft X-ray Telescope – specifically, the first simultaneous, co-aligned visible and soft X-ray images of the Sun, for which he developed methods to determine the distribution of chromospheric-temperature material as a function of height in the solar atmosphere. He then focused attention to the measurement of fundamental atomic and molecular parameters important to plasma interactions, with a dissertation on measurement of radiative decay and collision rates in a radio-frequency ion trap.
