    I am currently an NASA Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center working with Dr. Michael DiSanti on IR and optical spectroscopy of comets.  Before coming to Goddard I was a postdoc at the University of Texas at Austin for three years working with Dr. Anita Cochran on optical spectroscopy of comets.

    Research Interests

    Volatile Composition of Comets

    Comets are the most primitive remnants from the formation of the Solar System. This allows them to be used as "fossils" in order to understand how our Solar System formed. As comets are rich in ices such as water and carbon dioxide and carbon-bearing molecules such as hydrogen cyanide and ethane, their composition gives us insights into how molecules formed in the early Solar System and how they were incorporated into planetary objects.

    My reseach focuses on studying the volatile composition of comets at optical and infrared wavelengths through spectroscopy. Specifically, I am interested in linking optical and infrared observations to better understand the photochemistry occuring in cometary comae. Optical observations are the most sensitive and most abundant in the literature, but optical observations provide abundances of daughter species, species that are produced in the coma via photochemistry or other physical and chemical processes. This makes it difficult to interpret optical observations in terms of the composition of the cometary nucleus. On the other hand, infrared observations provide abundances of parent species, species that are released directly from the nucleus, but infrared observations are less sensitive and less abundant in the literature. Understanding the photochemistry occuring in cometary comae will allow for optical observations of daughter species to be better interpreted in terms of the composition of the nucleus.

    Current Projects

    Orbital Trends in Comets with the Spitzer Space Telescope

    Carbon Dioxide is the one of the most abundant volatiles present in comets, yet the inability to observe this species from ground-based facilities due to the influence of the Earth's atmosphere makes it incredibly difficult to study.  I am a co-I on a large survey with the Spitzer Space Telescope (which as a space-based platform can observe carbon dioxide without the influence of the Earth's atmosphere) to study carbon dioxide in a number of comets throughout their orbits to evaluate the importance of carbon dioxide in driving cometary activity.  More details are available here.

    Analyzing IR spectra of several comets obtained with the iSHELL instrument on NASA IRTF and NIRSPEC on Keck II. Also analyzing optical spectra obtained with the ARCES spectrograph at Apache Point Observatory, the Tull Coude spectrograph at McDonald Observatory, and the HIRES spectrograph on Keck I, as well as narrowband optical imaging of comets.

    Analyzed echelle spectra of several comets obtained with the ARCES spectrograph at Apache Point Observatory, the Tull Coude spectrograph at McDonald Observatory, and the HIRES spectrograph on Keck I.

    Teaching Experience


    August 2008-May 2010: Teaching Assistant, New Mexico State University. Responsibilities included teaching an interactive laboratory component that required one-on-one interactions with students.


    Spring 2016: Participated in the Institute for Science and Engineering Educators Professional Development Program (ISEE PDP) run by UC Santa Cruz. This program teaches participants about Inquiry-based pedagogical techniques and how to apply these in their classrooms. The program culminated in our group running our own Inquiry-based activity at the University of Texas at Austin in July 2016.
