Special Experience

CCSP-OWG
Dr Cahalan worked since 2003 with the multi-agency "Climate Change Science Program " (CCSP) now using the earlier name “United States Global Climate Research Program” (USGCRP) where he was selected as Chair of the Observations Working Group (OWG), by the Principals of the 13 participating federal agencies, including NASA, NOAA, NSF, DOE, EPA, USGS, and several others. Dr. Cahalan's OWG is responsible for assessing the state of the U.S. part of the global Earth Observing System, and also works with the international Group on Earth Observations to define areas of future development. As chair, Dr. Cahalan brought together participants from all 13 federal agencies involved in making and using Earth observations. The OWG meets on second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, reports issues to the agency Principals, and also interacts with the National Research Council and non-federal users and partners in climate observing.

NASA-EOS-SORCE
Since 1999 Dr. Cahalan served as Project Scientist of the SOlar Radiation and Climate Experiment, which was successfully launched in January 2003, carries 4 instruments built by University of Colorado's LASP, and has collected now 10+ years of solar radiation data of unprecedented accuracy, precision and spectral coverage. Dr. Cahalan has worked to provide effective links between the Earth and Space sciences in this area, bringing onboard a Deputy, Doug Rabin, who heads the Solar Physics Branch at Goddard, and suggesting the appointment at NASA/HQ of a Earth/Space liaison, who was selected as Donald Anderson, now at NOAA. Dr. Cahalan worked with the SORCE PI Gary Rottman, who was elected Fellow of the AGU, and science team member Judith Lean of NRL, an elected member of the NAS, to organize several successful workshops that have brought together top scientists from both Earth and Space science to collaborate on the issue of the Sun's forcing of Earth's climate.

IRC - 3DRT Working Group
In 2000, Dr. Cahalan was elected to the International Radiation Commission (IRC) of the WMO, for his seminal work in 3-dimensional atmospheric radiative transfer. Dr. Cahalan formed a new "3DRT Working Group" that is now a standing committee of the IRC, building on his leadership of the International Intercomparison of 3D Radiative Codes that brought together participants from 32 research groups in 6 countries. Dr. Cahalan has organized several workshops in this area, co-funded by NASA and DOE. He also chairs special sessions on this topic at the International Radiation Symposia that take place every 4 years. In 2008 Dr Cahalan was elected President of the IRC, by vote of the 40 commissioners, representing 20 countries. Since then he has organized several IRC annual meetings taking place in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He was principle organizer of the quadrennial International Radiation Symposium, at the Dahlem Cube in Berlin, in August 2012.
