Brief Bio


C. Richard DeVore joined the Space Weather Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in April 2013. Prior to that, since May 1983 he had been a research physicist in the Laboratory for Computational Physics and Fluid Dynamics at the Naval Research Laboratory. His research has focused on developing numerical algorithms for hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, implementing them on vector and parallel computers, and applying them to studies of the Sun, as well as to other areas of plasma science. His algorithms and software for obtaining accurate, robust, and flux-conserving solutions to the MHD equations, in particular, are in wide use by colleagues at NASA, across the US, and around the world. He has applied these numerical tools to the slowly evolving, large-scale solar magnetic field and to dynamical events at smaller scales.


Dr. DeVore has acted as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on numerous NASA research programs in theoretical and computational solar science. He has served on review panels for NASA and other agencies, and as a reviewer for journals including Nature, ApJ, A&A, Solar Physics, GRL, JGR, and the Journal of Computational Physics. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and the American Geophysical Union, and he is a Fellow of the American Physical Society in Computational Physics.


Dr. DeVore received a NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal and a GSFC Robert H. Goddard Honor Award in 2019 for his work on understanding the physics of solar eruptions. Previously, he received the University of Colorado's Donald E. Billings Award in Astro-Geophysics in a national competition in 1984 and the University of Louisville's Donald M. Bennett Award in Physics in 1977.
