Brief Bio

Dr. Nikolaos Paschalidis is Senior Project Scientist for Technology Advancement at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s Heliophysics Science Division (HSD). In his role he is leading innovative technologies, instruments, and mission concepts. He coordinates the GSFC/HSD’s IRAD program. He is a member of the Line of Business (LOB) where he participates in strategic planning and business development. He was GradStudent/PostDoc/Senior/Principal Staff at the Space Department of Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory in the period 1989-2010 before moving to GSFC in 2011.

Dr. Paschalidis is an experimental scientist and electrical computer engineer with overarching experience in both Space Science and Technology. His research interests include space weather spanning from the source at the Sun to the Earth and Planetary Magnetospheres / Ionospheres and to the outer boundaries of the Heliosphere.

He pioneered in space qualified advanced technologies, radiation hardened ASICs, detectors, sensors, microsystems, and instruments for foil/MCP/SSD - Time of Flight x Energy x Angle based; Charged and Neutral Particle Instruments in the energy range eV to GeV, Energetic Particle and Plasma Analyzers, Mass Spectrometers, ENA Imagers; he contributed to UV, X-Ray, and Laser Altimeters instruments. He has also developed advanced spacecraft avionics under the NASA/JPL New Millennium Program.

Dr. Paschalidis has advanced hardware and science contributions across the solar system in major NASA, ESA, JAXA space missions including:

Missions in flight: Parker Solar Probe Plus, JUICE, Solar Orbiter , Bepi-Colombo, Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, Van Allen Probes, JUNO, Pluto New Horizons, STEREO, IBEX, MESSENGER, IMAGE and CASSINI; and missions under development: IMAP, Europa Clipper, NASA/HERMES.

He is Principal Investigator of the ISS based Ring Current ENA instrument of the Storm Time O+ Ring current Imaging Evolution mission (STORIE/RENA) to be launched in 2026.

He led a serries of mini-INMS instrument for NSF/ExoCube and NASA Dellingr, PetitSat, and DIONE CubSats.

He demonstrated (sounding rockets) a high sensitivity LENA instrument for Oxygen atmospheric outflow and a high cadence suprasternal electron for aurora microbursts pulsations
