Dieter Bilitza awarded International Kristian Birkeland medal

Dieter Bilitza was awarded the 2013 International Kristian Birkeland medal for outstanding scientific results related to Space Weather and Space Climate. The Birkeland medal is awarded by the Norwegian academy of science in conjunction with the European Space Weather Week (ESSW). The medal will be presented during this year's ESSW this week in Antwerp, Belgium.

    Eric Christian (672) is quoted in a June 18 USA Today article about new Voyager results at the edge of the Solar System. The article reports on evidence that Voyager 1 may be entering interstellar space (crossing the heliopause) in the very near future (months).

    Proposals submitted by HSD members were accepted for SWARM mission.

    Guan Le's (674) proposal to ESA's call for Swarm Science and Validation Opportunity has been selected by ESA after peer review. She is now an official principal investigator for Swarm mission's science investigations. The title of the proposal is "A study of field-aligned currents using multi-point magnetic field measurements from Swarm". Peter Chi (674) is a co-Investigator of the proposal. Dieter Bilitza (672/ADNET) was also selected for the Swarm opportunity with his proposal, "Studying improvements of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model with SWARM data." He is co-investigator on another accepted Validation proposal with Claudia Stolle (DTU, Denmark) as PI.

    Eric Christian (672) gave a invited lunch talk on new results from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) to the Heliophysics Subcommittee (HPS) of the NASA Advisory Council Science Committee on February 27. Dr. Christian is the Mission Scientist for IBEX. Judy Karpen participated in the two-day meeting as a member of the HPS.

    Edward Sittler (673), John Cooper (672), and Nikolaos Paschalidis (670) attended the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) Plasma Consortium Meeting at the Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas (LPP) at the Ãcole Polytechnique near Paris. They were invited to attend by invitation from the Consortium leader, Nicolas Andrà of the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie (IRAP) at Toulouse to discuss collaboration on science and instrumentation for measurements of plasma particles in the Jupiter magnetospheric and moon ionospheric environments for the European Space Agency's proposed JUICE mission to the Jupiter system. The JUICE mission includes two flybys of the ocean moon Europa and orbital operations at the magnetic moon Ganymede.

    HPL staff conduct workshops on Transit of Venus, Heliophysics and Space Weather

    Carolyn Ng (672) and Elaine Lewis (672) conducted two workshops on two campuses in the City University of New York. One was for the professional development of 20 high school teachers at Queensborough Community College. Another was for 15 college students majoring in physical sciences and some faculty members at Medgar Evers College. Both workshops covered the Transit of Venus, and Heliophysics and Space Weather

    HPL and EPO staff organize new IBEX results for NSU.

    Eric Christian (672), IBEX Mission Scientist, Karen Fox (670/ADNET), and Susan Hendrix (130) helped organize a NASA Science Update (NSU) on new IBEX results. The NSU was held at NASA HQ on January 31 and covered the observations of interstellar neutral gas flowing into heliosphere presented in six papers that were just published in the Astrophysical Journal. The Goddard Science Visualization Studio provided most of the graphics for the NSU. The IBEX results received extensive worldwide news coverage.

    HSD members participate in the 6th CCMC Workshop.

    Several members of the Heliophysics Science Division, led by Director Michael Hesse (670), participated in the 6th CCMC (Community Coordinated Modeling Center) Workshop held in Key Largo, January 16-20. Lan Jian (672), among others, gave a talk, “1st-Year SHINE Project Report: Evaluation of Coronal and Heliospheric Models Installed at CCMC.”

    DSCOVR project officially formed to refurbish the Triana spacecraft

    The Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) project officially formed to refurbish the Triana spacecraft and its space weather instruments for NOAA. A. Szabo (672) is the project scientist and E. Summerlin (672) is the deputy project scientist.

    John Cooper (672) and co-authors (Ed Sittler/673, Alexander Lipatov/673-GPHI, Steve Sturner/661-CRESST) gave the presentation “Astrobiological Journeys to and from the South Polar Sea of Enceladus – Bidirectional Interactions with the Saturn Magmetosphere” in the Eyes of Enceladus session at the 2011 Fall AGU meeting. This presentation addressed flows of chemical energy via magnetospheric electron irradiation into the Enceladus surface and interior, and the feedbacks from the putative south polar sea below the irradiated surface to the magnetosphere.

    D. A. Roberts (672) ran a two-day working group meeting on November 8-9 for the Heliosphysics Data and Model Consortium. Also attending were J. Gurman (671), A. Szabo (672), R. McGuire (670), B. Candey (672), and a number of contractors, in addition to participants from across the country and from France. The group arrived at decisions for how to advance data access in Heliophysics, and the plan is to meet again in a few months to assess progress.

    The Solar Probe Plus mission completed its Mission Definition Review and System Requirements Review (MDR/SSR) on November 4. A. Szabo (672) is the NASA Mission Scientist.

    Ed Sittler (673) and John Cooper (672) attended the JUpiter ICy moon Explorer (JUICE) meeting at Meudon Observatory near Paris. They are actively participating in the meeting discussions where ESA is re-formulating their L1 Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter (JGO) mission, now called JUICE after the elimination of the Jupiter Europa Orbiter component. Cooper presented a poster entitled “Compositional Impact of Io Volcanism and Jupiter Magnetospheric Interaction on the Icy Galilean Moons.”

    Sun-Earth Day Team present at the annual Challenger Center Meeting

    Members of the Sun-Earth Day Team (Elaine Lewis, Troy Cline and Lou Mayo) presented at the annual Challenger Center Meeting in Alexandria VA on August 22. The 3-hour workshop is the second training for the Challenger Centers in space weather using Space Weather Action Center (http://sunearthday.nasa.gov/swac) as the tool they will use with educators prior to attending a Challenger Center Scenario where a CME Alert will cause students to have to react quickly to save their mission to Mars, Moon, and Comet. We have currently trained 2/3 of the Challenger Centers in space weather; the remaining Centers will be trained next year during their annual conference.

    Dieter Bilitza (672/GMU) participated as lecturer in the US-German Space Weather summer camp in Juliusruh, Germany. The joint activity between the University of Alabama Huntsville and the University of Rostock and the German Center for Aeronautics (DLR) gave about a dozen graduate students from each country not only an introduction to the science of Space Weather but also an opportunity to meet and network with students and researchers from both countries.

    "Sun 360" workshop held in Kiel, Germany

    O. C. St. Cyr (670), D. Pesnell, B. Thompson, J. Davila, N. Gopalswamy, J. Gurman (all 671), W. Thompson (ADNET/671), E. Christian, (672), T. Nieves-Chinchilla (CUA/672), D. Odstrcil (GMU/674), T. Von Rosenvinge (661), A. Posner, and R. Leamon (both NASA HQ) participated in the “Sun-360” workshop in Kiel, Germany, July 24-29. Over 180 participants discussed the latest in heliophysics research enabled by the 360-degree view of the Sun afforded by the STEREO spacecraft in conjunction with the rest of NASA's Heliophysics System Observatory. Dean Pesnell presented the invited talk “Solar Cycle Predictions” at this meeting. Also, W. Thompson and J. Gurman were able to visit a nearby amateur radio site that is critical in capturing STEREO “space weather beacon mode” telemetry used by space weather forecasters.

    John Cooper (672) attended the NASA Lunar Science Forum and talked on first-year results of the Lunar Solar Origins Exploration (LunaSOX) project funded by the Lunar Advanced Science and Exploration Research (LASER) program. The LunaSOX data services web site is operational for public access to Apollo, Explorer 35, and Artemis data at lunasox.gsfc.nasa.gov, first results were discussed for hybrid kinetic simulations with Artemis data of solar wind interactions with the Moon, and a mission concept for the Lunar Solar Occultation Explorer to do solar coronal charge state measurements, remotely and in-situ from lunar orbit, was discussed.

    LunaSOX data service released to the public.

    The Lunar Solar Origins Exploration (LunaSOX) project data service, lead by John Cooper (672), has been released to the public this week. LunaSOX now provides enhanced data access and analysis services for lunar plasma interaction data from Apollo through the ongoing Artemis lunar orbiter mission. This project operates in support of NASA's Lunar Advanced Science and Exploration Research (LASER) program to investigate origins of plasma kinetics and composition arising in the lunar space and surface environments from interactions with solar wind plasma. The project also advances general interests in science and mission applications for heliophysics of and from the Moon. Data accessible from the LunaSOX web site at http://lunasox.gsfc.nasa.gov/ include plasma and supporting parameters from the ARTEMIS P1 and P1 spacecraft now transitioning into lunar orbit operations, the Apollo 12 and 15 ALSEP lunar surface solar wind monitors, and the Explorer 35 spacecraft.
