Akash Ashapure is a Research Scientist with Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) at the Terrestrial Information Systems Lab of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). His expertise lies in remote sensing, geospatial data analytics, and machine learning, with a focus on utilizing high-performance-computing (HPC) for large-scale geospatial data processing. Dr. Ashapure earned his Ph.D. in Geomatics from Purdue University in 2021. His current focus is to develop methodologies to mitigate atmospheric effects in multispectral and hyperspectral satellite sensors over inland and nearshore coastal waters. His work involves leveraging HPC and cloud computing to generate extensive datasets through radiative transfer simulations. These datasets are then used to develop and validate sensor-specific machine learning models for atmospheric correction. Additionally, he is leading a project aimed at creating a cloud-masking procedure for satellite images over water bodies, aimed at reducing uncertainties in satellite-derived products.
