Brief Bio

Mr. Thomas F. Eck received a BS in meteorology from Rutgers University in 1977 and an MS in meteorology from the University of Maryland (College Park) in 1982 where his major interests were in micrometeorology and atmospheric radiation. In 1981 he began work at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and has continued there (in association with the Biospheric Sciences Branch, Code 618) for more than 32 years, through to the present. During his career he was involved in algorithm development and data analysis for the Nimbus-7 cloud climatology project. He was also active in instrument calibration, field instrument deployment, and data analysis for the PARABOLA instrument project (plant canopy bi-directional reflectance), and analysis of AVHRR satellite data for water vapor retrievals. Beginning in 1992 and continuing through the present he has carried out instrument calibration and deployment, field experimentation, data analysis, and scientific research within the global Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) project. He has authored and co-authored over 110 papers in the refereed literature with recent emphasis on studies of the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols, in particular from biomass burning, fossil fuel combustion, coarse-fine mode mixtures, also aerosol modification by cloud processing and the attenuation of solar flux by aerosols.

Earth Science: Aerosols

Atmospheric Aerosol Remote Sensing - Involved in ground-based remote sensing of aerosol optical properties with the AERONET network

Positions/Employment

Senior Scientist

University of Maryland Baltimore County, GESTAR II - NASA Goddard, Greenbelt, MD

November 2021 - Present

Mr. Eck is currently involved in the analysis of data collected from a network (AERONET) of automatic Sun-sky radiometers located in all continents and on oceanic islands. He has analyzed the spectral, spatial, and temporal variability of aerosol optical depth, size distributions and single scattering albedo from sun/sky radiometer measurements and retrievals. He is also involved in monitoring solar irradiance and in estimating aerosol absorption from a combination of aerosol optical properties from sunphotometer, measured irradiances, and cloudless sky flux models. He has participated in several experimental field campaigns to characterize aerosol properties.

Assistant Research Scientist

University of Maryland at Baltimore County, Assistant Research Scientist, November 2000–May 2011 - NASA Goddard

November 2000 - May 2011

Same as for USRA (May 2011 - Present)

Senior Research Scientist

Raytheon ITSS Corporation - NASA Goddard

December 1981 - November 2000

Mr. Eck was involved in the analysis of data collected from a network (AERONET) of automatic Sun-sky radiometers located in all continents and on oceanic islands. He has participated in several experimental field campaigns to characterize aerosols, such as the SCAR-B experiment in Brazil in 1995, the ZIBBEE experiment in Zambia in 1997, and the SAFARI 2000 dry season campaign in Zambia in August-September 2000. He has authored and co-authored journal and conference papers on aerosol optical properties, solar irradiance at the surface, and atmospheric water vapor. Mr. Eck has also investigated the relationship between atmospheric water vapor and the AVHRR split window temperature difference for various land surfaces. Mr. Eck has previously been involved in the analysis and validation of cloud parameters determined from Nimbus-7 sensor data. He participated in defining the algorithm for cloud detection, which invokes the use of radiances in both the ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths. In addition, Mr. Eck has utilized UV reflectivity and total ozone measured by the Nimbus-7 TOMS instrument to estimate irradiance in the PAR and UV-B spectral regions. Mr. Eck was also responsible for processing and analysis of data from the PARABOLA (Portable Apparatus for Rapid Acquisition of Bidirectional Observations of Land and Atmosphere) instrument, a unique sensor that measured the spectral bidirectional reflectances of both the ground and sky hemispheres. He participated in field experiment work, instrument calibration, initial data processing, and analyses of the radiances, reflectances, and computed vegetation indices. He has also co-authored journal and conference papers on bidirectional reflectance properties of plant canopies.
