Brief Bio


Dr. Diego Janches joined the NASA/GSFC Space Weather Laboratory in October, 2010. He obtained his Master in Physics in 1993 at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1996 he obtained a Master in Astronomy and Astrophysics and a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2000 both at Penn State University. After obtaining his doctorate and before joining NASA, Dr. Janches was a postdoctoral fellow at the Swedish Institute for Space Physics in Kiruna, Sweden, a NSF/CEDAR Postdoc at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, a visiting fellow at Kyoto University in Japan, and a Sr. Research Scientists at NorthWest Research Associates/CoRA office. Dr. Janches’ research expertise focus on resolving major outstanding problems related to the impact of the meteoric flux in the upper atmosphere, with primary emphasis on their role on the aeronomy of the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) atmospheric region. Specific applications include: The sources and variations (temporal and geographical) of the meteoric flux, and its role in the chemical composition of the MLT; The origin and global distribution of the metallic layers, dynamical transport of metals, and modelling the subsequent formation of meteoric smoke and its seasonal distribution in the MLT; Orbital dust distribution and populations in the solar system; asteroidal and cometary origins; The mechanisms by which metallic atoms are ablated from the meteoroid body and deposited in the MLT; Physical and Electronic risk assessment to satellites due to meteoroid impacts. He has extensive expertise in using radars, specifically Incoherent Scatter Radars and meteor radars to study the impact of meteors on the MLT. He also works on topics related to the impact of Gravity Waves (GWs) in the MLT and has developed, together with Dr. D. Fritts (Gats, Inc) and Prof. W. Hocking (University of Western Ontario) a meteor radar design to measure vertical transfer of horizontal momentum flux in the MLT by GWs. In particular he has deployed two of these radars in Southern Argentina and King George Island, Antarctica. At NASA, Dr. Janches is currently developing a Spaceborne Na Lidar concept to be deployed in the International Space Station in order to study globally small-scale dynamics in the MLT. He has over 50 publications in Peer-Reviewed journals

major duties are included the development of new concepts, methods, or techniques that may have a signi cant impact on science or technology, participate as principle or co-investigator for sounding rocket or small satellite based upper atmospheric research, serve on important committees and review panels of technical groups and professional organizations; isolating and de ning critical conditions and problems within the NASA's research and development program or project; preparing consolidated reports and journal articles of the scienti c and technical research approaches used and results obtained; making formal presentations to other Federal agencies, universities, professional societies, and state and local government organizations; determining the validity and soundness of theories, standards, and guides developed for improving research and technical activities; and resolving critical problems that impact research a ecting multiple stakeholders.

Research includes, but is not limited to, to resolve major outstanding problems related to the impact of the
meteoric flux in the upper atmosphere, with primary emphasis on their role on the aeronomy of the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) atmospheric region. Programmatic duties include:
1) Project Scientists of the NASA TIMED Satellite which includes responsibility for the management of the overall development and operational efforts for Heliophysics space science program in ITM physics by overseeing the largest NASA Satellite dedicated to ITM studies. Assesses and evaluates the mission program operational activities ensuring the achievement of the scientific requirements established by the Heliophysics Senior Review process. Develops and justifies science budget in coordination with other offices at NASA/GSFC, NASA-Headquartes and participating external academic and research institutions in order to establish cost, schedule of products, deliverables, and services.


2) Technical Officer for the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere Low Cost Access to Space (Mag-ITM/LCAS) and ITM Support Research (SR) programs. Duties include serve as an expert consultant regarding problems in NASA ITM space mission, assisting the Heliophysics Division Director and Program Scientists to define program requirements, prepare and conduct peer-review panels and develop funding recommendations.

Achievements:
-Leading Project Scientist in the Argentine Ionospheric Radar Experiment Station (AIRES) involving the development of an upper atmospheric facility in La Plata, Argentina by re-deploying the Advance Modular Incoherent Scatter Radar (AMISR) to the Argentine Institute of Radio Astronomy campus near the Arecibo Geomagnetic conjugate point. This effort will result on a Global Scale Ionospheric Plasma Laboratory by placing two NSF upper atmospheric facilities at both end of the same geomagnetic line.

-Deployment and operation of two high power meteor radars, the first one at Tierra del Fuego in Southern Argentina and the second one at the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz in King George Island, as part of a large international effort which includes scientists and institutions from Argentina, Brazil, the UK, Canada and the USA.

-PI and Co-I in NSF, NASA and ONR proposals amounting in more than $3M in five years of research funds

- More than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals reporting extensive Research Radar and Lidar Studies of the Micrometeor Mass Input and its effects into the MLT. Orbital dust distribution and populations in the solar system, Ionospheric and Gravity Wave in the MLT studies using Incoherent Scatter and Meteor Radars.

-Organization and coordination of American Students visits to Argentina to perform research and develop international collaborations. Organization of International Schools and Conferences.

-Active user of NSF and international radar facilities including the Arecibo 430 MHz radar in Puerto Rico, the 50 MHz Jicamarca radio observatory in Peru, the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar in Alaska, the
European Incoherent Scatter Radar (EISCAT) in northern Scandinavia and the MU radar in Japan.

-Undergraduate and graduate student thesis advisor.

-Part of an Antarctic project that involves: 1) the maintenance and operation of a meteor radar; and 2) the installation and maintenance of an all-sky Na camera in the Amudsen-Scott station at the South Pole.

Performed reaserch at the Arecibo Observatory on meteoric mass input in the upper atmosphere. Operate the 430 MHz Arecibo Incoherent scatter radar Mentored undergraduate students participating in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer program at the Observatory.

1. Organized and hosted the Radar Meteor workshop in Spring of 2003 held at the Observatory. This in-
ternational meeting was attended by more than 50 participants from UK, Canada, USA, Russia and the
