Brief Bio

Dr. Benna is a planetary scientist with a research emphasis in plasma physics and planetary magnetospheres dynamics.

Dr. Benna’s main research interest is the numerical modeling of planetary magnetospheres and exospheres. Besides his scientific work, he uses his engineering experience to lead and support the development of several space-borne instruments (ROSETTA-CONSERT, CONTOUR-NGIMS, MSL-SAM, LADEE-NMS, MAVEN-NGIMS, CLPS-SEAL, GDC-MoSAIC, and Artemis III/LEMS). Dr. Benna has authored or coauthored more than 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, and more than 200 communications or invited presentations in international conferences related to the field of planetary science. His publications include articles on MHD modeling of planetary magnetospheres, comets and icy moons of the solar system, radiotomography techniques, and ill-posed inverse problems.

Dr. Benna received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the Engineering School of Tunis (ENIT) in 1999. After obtaining a M.Sc. in Radio-wave Telecommunication from the University of Tunis in 2000, he received in 2002 a Ph.D. in Space Science from the University of Toulouse in France. From 2002 to 2003, Dr. Benna was an associate scientist at the Planetary and Terrestrial Geophysics Laboratory (CNRS) in France, and from 2003 to 2006, he was an NRC postdoctoral fellow at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

Current Projects

Lunar Environment Monitoring Station for Artemis 3 (LEMS-A3) - Principal Investigator

Moons

The Lunar Environment Monitoring Station for Artemis 3 (LEMS-A3) is a compact, autonomous, and self-sustaining seismometer suite designed to carry out continuous (day and night), long-term (two years longevity goal), monitoring of the lunar seismic environment at the South Polar region. LEMS-A3 is a self-powered, self-managed, and self-communicating flight system that has all attributes of a standalone science mission. Once deployed on the surface and activated by the Artemis 3 crew, it requires no support from the Human Landing System or the Artemis 3 crew to operate. DISSIPATION Sounding Rocket Investigation - Principal Investigator

Earth's Thermosphere

The DISSIPATION Sounding Rocket will provide, for the first time, comprehensive and concurrent in situ measurements of the response of the thermosphere to Joule heating in the auroral transition region. Joule heating results from friction between the ion and neutral gases when the gases are not flowing at the same speed and direction. Energy dissipation within the transition region via particle precipitation and Joule heating can cause profound horizontal and vertical redistributions of thermospheric mass density, composition, temperature, and winds. Most of the knowledge of this dissipative process is based on remote and/or limited observations of neutral gas and plasma parameters. DISSIPATION is designed to provide a more direct observation. Geospace Dynamics Constellation (GDC) - Modular Spectrometer for Atmosphere and Ionosphere Characterization (MoSAIC) - Principal Investigator

Earth's Thermosphere

GDC is a coordinated group of satellites that will provide the first direct global measurements of the dynamic and complex region of space enveloping Earth – known as the ionosphere and thermosphere (I-T) region. MoSAIC will measure thermospheric winds and the composition of the thermosphere-ionosphere by observing the charged and non-charged particles within near-Earth space. The MoSAIC instrument is a quadrupole mass spectrometer, which filters these particles according to mass for detailed analysis. (Read more: NASA Selects Investigation Teams to Join Geospace Dynamics Mission - NASA)

Surface and Exosphere Alteration by Landers (SEAL) - Principal Investigator

Moons

The Surface and Exosphere Alteration by Landers (SEAL) instrument aims to investigate the interaction of lunar regolith with volatiles from the lander's rocket exhaust, constraining the adsorptive properties of the regolith and yielding insight into perturbations of past and future surface samples from the Moon and other bodies. The SEAL instrument will be delivered to the lunar surface by one of NASA’s already-selected Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) in 2026.
