Current Projects

Polarimeter for Relativistic Astrophysical X-ray Sources (PRAXyS)

PI of the PRAXyS mission, selected in August 2015 for a Phase A study.    PRAXyS is a Small Explorer mission that will provide the first sensitive survey of the X-ray polarization of black hole and neutron star sources.   Polarization is expected to yield clues to the geometry and emission mechanisms not available via other observational channels.    PRAXyS exploits the polarization sensitivity of photoelectric absorption

HaloSat

Co-Investigator.    HaloSat is an APRA funded CubeSat mission that will search for evidence of a hot galactic halo of the Milyway Galaxy.    Oxygen line emission will trace the distribution of the halo, which could account for up to half of all normal matter associated with the Galaxy.  The HaloSat collaboration is led by Prof. P. Kaaret at the U. of Iowa.

Education

Doctor of Philosophy,  University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1986
Thesis: "H I Structure and the Soft X-ray Background",  Advisor: Professor Dan McCammon
Bachelor of Arts,  Swarthmore College, 1979
